Prots aren't viable. As an attribute line at least. That's a major part of what is wrong with the game atm. There are only 4 viable prot skills, and by prot skills I mean actual PROTS not condition removal etc. At the moment and they are Aura of Stability, Guardian, Shield of Absorption, and Aegis(Somewhat). Know what's missing that should be here? The major prot skills Protective Spirit and Spirit Bond. Know why these skills aren't viable anymore? Because unlike offensive skills getting buffs these skills have remained the same. 10 energy is just too much given the amount of pressure teams can inflict now and given how cheap it is to inflict offense and quickly target swap.
So where does the prot role go? It's shifted over to the restoration line with skills like Weapon of Warding, Resilient Weapon, Weapon of Shadow(awesome prot skill) etc. These are not as effective protection skills as PS+SB, but there are healing conditionals mixed in with them. Plus there are cheap pure heals too. Really the only way to prot now is with armor buffs + minor prots (like the 4 mentioned earlier) hence why several skills were seen rising in use: Disciplined Stance (nerfed), Defensive Stance (nerfed), the long standing Protective Was Kaolai (nerfed), and Balanced Stance (for the KD and crit dmg immunity).
So as the major Prots became less and less viable these took their places on casters, because it has been feasible to live with the minor prots and out healing damage on warriors, rangers, and dervishes. So, with only 1-2 casters without the extra armor only minor protting worked alright. This was the last meta basically.
Now however, there is no prot role. It's a prot skill here on WoH or PnH bar and the restoration line. Maybe it's just that I find having 4/8 members investing highly into healing prayers or restoration magic annoying, I don't know. What I do know is it seems just wrong that protection prayers, one of the standout differences between this game and others, is dying. Again it's due to a lack of attention to Power Creep which has resulted in buff after buff to offense, see major issues here.~>Sins WDBUser The Sins We Die By Sig.png 08:51, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
