  • Issue: It is rarely used. Not really worth the elite slot. The damage is too small. You can spike better (and I believe also produce more pressure?) with Eviscerate -> Executioners.
  • Suggestion: Keep it with the same adrenaline cost, but make it:
"Elite Axe Attack. If this attack hits a foe suffering from Deep Wound, you strike for +10..34..40 damage. Otherwise you inflict a Deep Wound."
So Eviscerate -> Executioner's will still be the best spike, but this might see more play in casual areas. It gives a more spammable deep wound than Dismember, and allows some bar compression, but wouldn't be overpowered since you can't use it immediately after itself. Maybe it could be buffed a little more even. ;)

  • Issue: Supposed to be good at pressure, but is mediocre.
  • Suggestion: In addition to its current damage, add "This attack deals +1...8...10 additional damage for each condition on your target. (Maximum +30)". This would give it synergy with the other pressure oriented Axe Skills (Dismember, Axe Rake, Axe Twist, Lacerating Chop). This would also give it tons of power, but would be easily countered and fail at spiking.

  • Issue: Meh.
  • Suggestion: Make it cause Cracked Armor. It makes sense with the word "cleave" and it would provide a nifty cover for DW to follow Dismember.

  • Issue: Lower DPS than Eviscerate when chained with Dismember and other 5 adrenaline skills.
  • Suggestion: Adjust additional damage to scale to +40 at 15 Axe Mastery. Increase to 5 adrenaline if necessary to compensate for the added damage.

Look at all the above. Generally it's still too weak, espacially compared to Eviscerate.
Suggestion 1
Either increase the damage, perhaps to +15...39...45 or whatever, to make up for the lack of extra effects, or add one. For example:
"Elite Axe Attack. If this attack hits you deal +10...26...30 damage. If it hits a foe suffering from Cracked Armour, you inflict a Deep Wound for 3...10...12 seconds, otherwise you inflict Cracked Armour for 2...8...9 seconds.
Reasoning
Cracked Armour is hard to apply, especially since the warrior, who has skills which improve with it, has no way to inflict it. Making Cleave the only warrior skill which could apply Cracked Armour would instantly make it used in builds with skills which take advantage of it. I know ANet seem to like the class synergy forced by the current Cracked Armour situation but I don't think this would break that too much because Cleave is, after all, an elite, and to balance it out the duration is quite low.
I also suggest a Deep Wound to make it as effective as a spike skill as Eviscerate (Craked Armour is OK if other people are then attacking your target but on it's own it's not much good, especially not against foes who already have low armour) but it's a conditional one with a much shorter duration than Eviscerate's 5...17...20 seconds.
The fact that hitting once inflicts Cracked Armour which then allows you to hit again to get the Deep Wound is an extra buff, but it's not that big a one because unless you use an adrenaline-boosting skill the CA will probably be removed before you can use Cleave again (especially when targets block) and with the CA duration being fairly short foes are still just about able to kite away and/or block enough that you can't get 4 adrenaline before it's run out.
If this made Cleave actually overpowered then you could make up for it by decreasing the damage I guess.
Suggestion 2
Just add a "This attack cannot be blocked" bit.
Reasoning
Instant, simple buff, with the added advantage of being in-theme (makes sense since you're "cleaving" through your opponent's defenses, so to speak).

Remove bonus damage, make it cause DW. lol, wounding strike is still way better! But this needs a big boost, it is worse than symbolic strike w/ 2 signets now. And thats a meelee attack, doesn't even need an Axe.

Yeah, simply by the fact that an elite skill ISN'T being used, that instantaneously begins to signify that there is a lack of usefulness in the skill, or the skill is plain useless. Cracked armor sounds nice for the skill, though. hat or 1s. cast time. Phill Gaston 03:41, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

The problem is that it borks your adrenaline

Damage is not really much and it borks adrenaline gain
Suggestion
Add "and you gain 1 strike of adrenaline". It becomes a "free" +31 damage. Reduce activation to 1/2 second.


Durga Dido's Proposal

Issue.
This skill has one big problem,it does not cause Deep Wound, therefor you have to bring Dismember.Eviscerate keeps this skill unwanted.

In order for this buff to be worth it Dismember would have to be buffed too,so dismember>cleave chain can actually be viable like eviscerate>executioner is. something like 5...17 damage plus the deep wound, that seems to be the numbers for a 5 adrenaline axe attack with a extra bonus attached to it.

By adding DW into the picture, this attack develops more appeal for usage as it can cause DW (if the condition is met) and bonus damage like that of Eviscerate for only 4 adrenaline! It's like gambling for DW, but it also promotes more skillful play as you have to actually be watching your foe's health in order to apply the DW condition.
