ArenaNet talk:Guild Wars 2 suggestions/Action Battle System Control Scheme

Wooow! I think this will include a GW controler to be sold with the game, too. Althogh it will be interesting to play with a controler, you will not be able to type in the chat bar during a fight using the keyboard. Or drawing directions on the minimap. You should come up with a solution for these two issues. In general the idea is good coz it will make GW a more action style game like on game consoles. I like this idea. And it will give Anet the opportunity to make GW2 a PC, PS3, Xbox 360 game. A lot more players will start playing GW in the future. Anet, Please, take this in consideration!

Question

Which are these things that makes you belive this will be implemented? Sounds rather farfetched to me. Backsword 21:14, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Obviously, their statement about the removal of point and click movement suggests a controller interface, but also, I remember while reading Gaile's comments on how professions and skills will work in GW2. Though vague, it also gave me the impression that they were going for an action battle scheme. Also, their comment that there will be far fewer skills in GW2 suggests that our physical attacks and abilities will be more varied and complex. Then there are the comments made by another Anet member saying that they wanted the world of GW2 to be more fun to explore and navigate. There was also a comment, I believe in that Q&A article, which literally said they wanted to make GW2 a more immersive gameplay experience. Then, I believe there was a comment somewhere suggesting that skills may be affected by jumping, suggesting that we will be able to coordinate our jumps with our skills. A related comment suggested that skills may have variable effects or multiple functions; an action battle system would allow the motion of the character to influence their skills, thus giving us variable effects. That comment has also been interpreted as meaning that our immediate environment might influence our skills. An action battle system would give us better control of our motion in battle, allowing us to choose our immediate surroundings.. This all suggests to me that Anet is going for a more action oriented system and that is why they are having to revamp so much of the original GW game play. I know it's mostly subjective interpretations and I don't remember where I heard all of it. Still, though I wish I had more information to base this off of, I do believe that what little information we do have about GW2 gameplay suggests that Anet intends to incorporate an action battle system into GW2.--Shai Halud 23:18, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Well, obviously skills will be much more situational. And click to move will be dropped. That's much clear. But from that there is is still a giant leap to what you think will be implemented. Eg. what excludes the possibility of a standard WASD+mouse interface? Backsword 17:08, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
Nothing. Like I said, it's a subjective opinion. After reading all these things, it just seemed to me that an action battle system would be the most natural way to implement them. If that's not the case, then I wasted a few hours typing up a suggestion. If I'm right though, I thought Anet might be interested in looking at a fan suggested controller layout. That's all... Oh, wait, I just remembered what WASD means. Such an interface could be used even if an action battle system were incorporated and it may remain a secondary option, but, in my opinion, 12-button controllers are just a more natural and fluid way to control characters in a three-dimensional environment. --Shai Halud 19:37, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
