Since around December of 2008, many skins have been available for purchase using Tournament Reward Points from Tolkano in the Great Temple of Balthazar (and his various other locations). However, the majority of these skin have remained entirely unseen by the community -- many among that number don't even have pages on the wiki, remaining red links for the time being. This is for a variety of reasons:
- Tournament Reward Points (TRPs) are hard to get. You have to play either Hero Battles (an arena you've admitted is so dead you're actually flushing it) or GvG (which consists of bloodspike and bloodspike, and ultimately is open to only a small percentage of the overall community) in order to earn them, and even then the number earned is quite small.
- TRPs can be better spent. Five TRPs = 1 Zaishen Key, which are enormously valued, whereas a TRP invested into a weapon yields no monetary gain.
- The Xunlai Tournament House is down. Face it, the XTH provided 90% of tournament points, and its closure means it is now even harder to earn TRPs.
- Only PvP characters can use them. The weapons must be assigned to a PvP character, who are by their very nature meant to be impermanent, yet TRPs have a permanent value in the form of currency from Zaishen keys. Furthermore, weapons cannot simply be "unlocked" to be usable on any PvP character after that -- each iteneration of a weapon costs the full amount of points.
- The layer system is prohibitive. Even if a player had the time and dedication to earn the massive costs for some of the items, he or she would be unable to purchase them because you must purchase "common" skins, i.e. plain and boring ones, before buying the good (and more importantly, unknown) ones.
In short, almost nobody uses the weapons for the various reasons given above, which means that -- short of extracting the data through the .dat file -- we may never see some of them. Additionally, some of the skin are available in PvE, but only as green items. Two of my personal favorite examples are the Darkwing Wand and Willcrusher Staff, both of which are listed amongst Tolkano's collection, but are only seen in PvE as Menzes' Ambition and the Willcrusher. Both are quite elegant, but because those green items are pretty terrible, they are almost never seen.
What I am requesting is not a change to items that already drop in PvE, including those that only drop extremely rarely, such as the Crystalline Sword, or those that are just plain hard to get, liike Tormented items. All I am asking is this: revise the system. Ideally, any player could -- through a little hard work & effort, but NOT grinding -- earn a weapon of their choosing. The way the Bonus Mission Pack was implemented was an ideal example of this: you had fun, but earned an item too. The BMP was a lot of work to make, though, so I'm not going to ask for another one of those. My suggestions, therefore, are:
- Make these items drop in PvE. This next part is important, though, so listen up: make them available to all/most players. If a player wants an item, they should be able to get it. Weapons like the Bone Dragon Staff, Crystalline Sword and Obsidian Edge are simply out of reach of 99.99% of players because of how rarely they drop, and a good 75% of those players may never even see one because they're so hard to get. That's not an effective use of resources by any definition: you are making content only an extremely limited percentage of your playerbase will ever be able to enjoy. Making something "elite" is one thing, making it unattainable is another.
- Make them for all applicable attributes. I'm not saying you should make a wand for hammer mastery, obviously, but each weapon should come in its corresponding attributes, not just primary attributes or attributes for a specific profession.
To expand on this, I suggest using an existing rewards system. As much as I loathe to use it, the Zaishen coins would work pretty well with this, though I believe you should lower the cost of the equipment packs to compensate. Personally, I think one gold coin would be a fair price for a weapon. Please don't make it insanely high like you did the bags -- 15 coins is a crapton of grinding that most people simply do not want to do. I would suggest creating 10 NPCs, one for each profession, then using the names of 10 prominent wiki users and garbling their spelling, then giving them a list of available items for each attribute. Again I mention, only list the items that cannot be attained in PvE or are only available as green items in PvE in these collectors' dialogues. If you list the existing PvE items, two things would happen: first, their value would drop precipitously; second, the lists would all be so long they would be difficult to navigate. The system would be relatively simple: talk to a collector, give him/her a coin, he/she puts a blank (and by that, I mean inscribable and upgradable) version of the selected item in your invetory. Not hard. Like a soda machine, but with dangerous weapons. If necessary, I should be able to provide a list of which skin are available in PvE, which ones are available as greens only, and which ones are not available except through Tolkano at your request.
