Hackers[edit]

I have a small amount of pity for you, but Hackers <> Angry Ex-Girlfriend to whom you provided the username, password, and security question response. It is first always the responsibility of the account holder to prevent loss, not the provider. That being said, yes, there should be a system in place to prevent actual "hacking". -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 18:07, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

WoW also has a monthly fee, so Blizzard is able to do shit like that.. --dark chaos 18:09, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Well she got on my computer when I wasn't home and took the information it's not like I handed it to her on a silver platter. I prevented it in everyway possible but stuff happens. I would gladly pay a monthly fee to ensure the future protection of my characters and my property. --~Danger~ 10:10, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Even if one never handed anyone their information to anyone, did everything correctly to basically assure that their information was never leeked, it is still possible to be hacked. As what happened to me a few days ago on my GW account. I had not played GW in months, nor do I travel to/visist dangerous sites. I run virus scans and other software that would detect keyloggers every day. So I did everything possible on my end, and yet I still got hacked. While I've only been playing since 2009, and I did not lose any characters, I lost well over 100 plat worth of mats, armor, white dye, black dye, and other stuff. So, its not always that they got the information from you. Chances are though, you did give your GF the pass though. But hackers do not always need to get your information from you. They have ways to get that stuff. And I do not know why GW does not have a back up system. There should be one. Forgerofsoul 20:11, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

You might think that your computer is safe and secure because you run antivirus everyday. You might think your firewall and network settings are completely secure. But you'll be surprised how many computers have outdated antivirus or even rouge antivirus applications....and how many of these antivirus programs are easily circumvented by malware. For example, Mcaffee, norton, antivir, avast, kaspersky and other antivirus programs have certain vulnerabilities that allow malicous code to change the programs behavior to "hide" certain files and applications. There are also many vulnerabilities in web browsers that allow fly-by-downloads, which silently install malicious apps on your computer. So, just because you have antivirus, firewall, updated web browser and OS, and a hardware firewall doesn't mean that you are completely safe. All it takes is one click on a malicious attack website to accidentally download something silently that will bypass all the protections that you thought kept you safe and sound. Also just because a website doesn't look dangerous doesn't mean that it isn't, most malicious attack websites are innocuous looking websites like an fake anime blog, gaming site, and even fake antivirus sites that "look" real. One attack website that I read about was a website that looked like a site setup to teach someone on how to patch one of the vulnerabilities that allowed fly-by-downloads on internet explorer 7, but the website was designed to take advantage of the specific vulnerability it self, and many people fell for it, and had their credit cards and bank accounts stolen... and most of their anti-virus programs reported nothing. So, how do you make sure that you won't be hacked 100%? You can't. All you can do is educate your self on the latest threats, and learn how to spot things that are wrong on websites and emails even if it looks completely normal to a layman. Oh, also, trojans and worms are becoming more prevalent on iphones and android mobile devices so becareful when syncing your devices to your PC. --Lania User Lania Elderfire pinkribbon.jpg20:57, 05 October 2010 (UTC)

Alternate solution[edit]

Don't have a girlfriend. They're a waste of time and money. Study instead or at least play Guild Wars (lol). Actually, no, go play WoW. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 128.119.176.149 (talk).

Or play a good game instead. Koda User Koda Kumi UT.jpeg Kumi 11:09, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

its your fault[edit]

Yes i said it, its entirely your fault. IF she was crazy and pissy when you hooked up with her, you should have been more careful with your game. Second, its not Anet's fault she happened to stumble accross your account. third, its your fault for making her do such a thing, like, why would she delete your characters? There must have been something that triggered her actions. either by you or something else. if you knew she was devious from the start. your just another one of those despereate little boys who want any type of girl, even if shes hella chaste or if shes a canibal. 4th, we dont know whether you really had a henchman tonic or if you had some valuable tings or not, that could have been made up for pity reasons. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.202.172.177 (talk).

5th....it's a video game. Damn. Look on the bright side and you can replay the whole game....no wait you have a girlfriend...when do you find time to play video games?----Xtreme 01:15, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Not My Fault[edit]

Yes thats right it is not my fault at all. We were living together she could have found my account stuff through hacking into my pc without my knowledge. I would never tell anyone any account information etc. She did not seem crazy at all when we got together. Anet also can prove I had a henchman tonic because I had the only one made for Erick... I was the one they made that henchman from. I have signed documents in my posession from anet. I can infact prove I won the contest. Further more, We both played the game together I saw no reason for her to delete my character and after we had been seperated awhile nothing seemed like it would happen. I think anet should include data backing insurance where a gamer can pay to have their data backed specifically that way there are still no monthly fees but if you want to protect yourself you can. --~Danger~ 20:33, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

You don't actually know what data back-up is, do you? User Felix Omni Signature.pngelix Omni 18:46, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
To be fair, there are multiple types of back-ups available, one of which is the type he's referring to. -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 19:38, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
Except we already know they maintain that back-up, because they're capable of doing rollbacks. User Felix Omni Signature.pngelix Omni 19:40, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
And said rollback is applied to everyone at once. Hence why they only do it in extreme cases (such as when Sup. Vigs were like 500g or something stupid). ~ PheNaxKian talk 12:34, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Right, which is not what he's asking for. He wants character specific back-ups, not system wide. He's basically beating a dead horse, but that's another story. -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 13:38, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
I thought they weren't capable of creating such a back up because of how the system's designed or something?. Could be wrong, but I vaguely recall seeing that somewhere. ~ PheNaxKian talk 17:49, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Yes, that's the company line, and what I was referring to. -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 17:57, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) Yep they pretend to being unable to, but tbh a complete Game Backup - by definition - already includes a backup of every single account, character, items, etc. So while it would be more work to restore single Character / Account Data - compared to just copy back the complete backup - its not impossible... put an account lock on the Account in question, create an Account / Character on account in question and reset its Parameters to the one from the backup. Unless their Data Structure is horribly flawed it should be fairly easy to do... Nevertheless it's already been said that this is "beating a dead horse" --SilentStorm Talk to me 18:07, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

For those of you who didn't read I did not give her my password or any of my information I dont even have it written down anywhere. Quite frankly im not sure how she got it but it wasnt handed to her --~Danger~ 10:12, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
