New Policy to Solve problem[edit]

Ideally a policy should be in place to help simplify discussions such as over the MappingOut article. The aim is to create a policy to cover the addition of articles regarding third party programs. So far the majority is taken from the GWW:FANSITES policy which in my opinion should be very similar to that for third party programs. I have never proposed a policy before so some help and suggestions would be much appreciated.- TheRave User TheRave sig.jpg 22:41, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

I am struggling as to how to define the requirements (currently under "Criteria") that should be added. Obviously there must be some requirements so as to not have the list filled up with every random program someone has created related to GW, but I'm not sure exactly what they should be.- TheRave User TheRave sig.jpg 22:43, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
Criteria could be "any external or third-party application that is not covered by the fansites policy"?. Also, if we are going to allow this, i think it should be forced to include a hash verification method for the integrity of files straight from the author of the software.
In any case, we don't like it, no we don't, my preciouss... too much room for malicious or ToC-breaking 3rd party software.--Fighterdoken 22:45, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
Obviously the Programs list would contain a similar warning as found on the Guide to modifying in-game graphics page as it is a similar problem and also including the reminder that GWW/Arenanet hold no responsibility for external links.
I do agree there needs to be some kind of verification, such as check-source code from the author but this could possibly be more hassle than its worth.- TheRave User TheRave sig.jpg 22:50, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
And that is exactly the problem, if we can't guarantee that the content included complies with the Terms and Conditions, then we shouldn't facilitate the creation of such content on the wiki. As of right now, i think our "fansites" policy and GWW:CONTENT cover already anything that is worth of having on the wiki, content-wise (and i am refering to all the "guide to using (insert-software-here)" that we have).--Fighterdoken 22:56, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
The fact that ArenaNet does not condone the use of third-party software, and the fact that this wiki is officially hosted by ArenaNet is enough of a reason to reject any "official-ised" mention of third-party software. This actually includes Texmod but that issue is slightly different as that guide deals more with modding than with Texmod. -- ab.er.rant User Ab.er.rant Sig.png 07:22, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
Actually, after re-reading the user agreement, a policy like this may head off a similar issue in the future. In fact, it might be possible to merge this with the fansites policy, although the notability issue (asked below) is probably going to be difficult to nail down. -- ab.er.rant User Ab.er.rant Sig.png 07:44, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Notability[edit]

Good luck defining notability. I would say there is no third party program for GW which qualifies as notable under a reasonable criteria. 122.104.161.96 00:48, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
