Proposal[edit]

You all have asked that I discuss projects before starting them. As usual, I'm going about this backward. I've already made several attempts to do this kind of thing without asking for other peoples opinions. So now I'm putting it up for discussion.

I expect there will be a crowd that will oppose this just because it is me that is proposing it. If I am not mistaken the following invalid arguments will be presented:

  • This is a wiki. Wiki's are not meant for thit kind of thing.
Bullshit. Wikis are a method of marshaling community effort. This is a proposal to aid in coordinating those efforts.
  • This wiki is supposed to be about documenting Guild Wars.
This is for supporting the documentation effort.
  • This belongs on another site.
Other sites might find this useful, but this is specifically for this site and this community.
  • It is too complicated. It will confuse people.
Look at the results first. If the results are understandable, then it is not too complicated. You do not have to understand how the results have been achieved if you can use and verify the results.
  • It causes too big a load on the server.
This is not intended for the casual reader. It is not expected to be viewed that often. Since it does not exist yet, it can not overload the server now. When it exists, server load will be a technical problem and will probably have a technical solution.
  • It is disruptive.
So don't add to the noise.
  • It is not needed.
Bullshit. Several other people have tried to do similar things with varying degrees of success. They thought something like this was useful enough that they tried to do it themselves.

A couple of things... It's still rather unclear what this project aims to do exactly... You also need a relatively detailed to-do list for the completion of the project. --Lania ElderfireUser Lania Elderfire pinkribbon.jpg 20:24, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
Seems like a reasonable idea to me, as long as it's hived off somewhere where it doesn't interfere with users not involved in a given project. If a project has a master page (e.g. in the Project area or where ever), the report(s) could be sub-page(s) of that; relevant talk pages could have a section with a link back to the project master page to ease navigation. Sub-pages (either of articles or of talk pages) are also a possibility. Generated todo lists can be quite useful. --DryHumour 16:51, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
Purpose
Help keep track of progress of projects and other processes
To Do
Figure out what is possible and practical. Other items will be added when that is decided.

What makes you think this needs to be done in the same way for all projects? Backsword 14:26, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
And on top of that the scope of the project is too general and unfocused. You need something a lot more focused. How would you go about tracking progress of projects? what criteria would you use to rate the completion of projects? you have those items in the project page but it's still too general. --Lania ElderfireUser Lania Elderfire pinkribbon.jpg 16:23, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
Q: What makes me think this needs to be done in the same way for all projects?
A: Nothing. In fact I expect different projects will need different tools. I only expect to develop tools that other projects can use.
Q: What criteria would you use to rate the completion of projects.
A: I do not expect to rate other projects' completion. I expect to provide information that the other projects' members can use to guage their own progress.
Q: You need something more focused...
A: At this point, what is needed is a check on what is feasible and an understanding of how the needed information can be recorded. This is intended to be a real research project. I expect to make proposals (note the plural) and get opinions from people actually working on projects. At this point, nailing down all the specifics would be counter-productive. I barely have the problem defined and you are asking for solution details. Get Real.
