During the quest The Necromancer's Novice these traps are instant kill.[edit]

Has anyone confirmed that these traps are instant kill if the quest is active for the given character? My experimentation shows that it is survivable, but Necros must be at least L16 with pre-Max armor to do so. (So, yeah, unlikely for most ppl to survive, but not instant kill.) It's untrue. Confused lowlevel poster. Backsword 19:12, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

Survival levels (warning: LONG)[edit]

The levels indicated suggest that something is wrong. I did the calculation, given that the effect is documented as 500 health versus AL 0.

Based on a character who is using a white weapon with no mods and armour that is available in pre-Searing:

  • Warriors have AL 25, 27 for Krytan armour
  • Rangers have AL 10, 12 for Krytan armour, both with +30 versus elemental damage
  • Caster classes have AL 5, 7 for Krytan armour
  • Unarmoured characters have AL 0, 2 for the mythical Krytan Emperor's Clothing

The reference to Krytan armour is important. AL 2 reduces the damage taken from 500 to a hair under 483, which is not enough in itself to save a level 20 character, but the span is large enough that it makes a difference for others.

Anyway: the damage taken is:

  • Warrior: 324.2, 313.1 for Krytan armour
  • Ranger: 250, 241.5 for Krytan
  • Caster: 458.5, 442.9 for Krytan

These correspond to the following levels:

  • Warrior: 13/12
  • Ranger: 9
  • Caster: 18

Shields help a great deal, of course. An AL +16 shield (there is only one of these in pre-Searing, and it complicates matters by giving +30 health as well) moves a Warrior to AL 41/43, slightly better than a shieldless Ranger. A shielded ranger will be AL 56/58, which is enough to survive at level 4, after suffering 189.5/183.0 damage but also having 30 more health than normal. Well, he would be, but there is no way to have enough attribute points at level 4 to activate the full +AL benefit of the /bonus shield, so it counts as only +8, giving the ranger AL 48/50. This leaves the damage at 217.6/210.2, frustratingly close to survival at level 5. Note that a Warrior can spend all of his points in Tactics and add a +1 Tactics rune to a Krytan Helm to get Tac9 at level 7 and activate the full +16AL of the Serrated Shield, but it isn't enough to keep up with the Ranger, who is still ahead by 9 AL in Krytan armour, or 17 in normal armour (where the Warrior must be level 9 to get Tac9 because the headgear does not add to any attribute).

Whatever. The key is that W:5, R:8, Caster:16 is not the correct relationship. The +30AL versus elemental damage means that a correctly equipped level 6 ranger can survive this easily, and if a level 5 ranger has just the right combination of stuff in hand when he triggers the mine, he lives, while a level 7 warrior dies.

It's also clear that there are many variables (weapons with +health mods or +armour mods, for example), and calculating the correct answer is not easy, but that +30AL versus elemental damage definitely leaves rangers with the lowest minimum level for survival.

The article was edited with the idea that people are not likely to look at the gory details: folks just want to know if they are likely to die or not. So the current text is accurate in that sense: ...characters can survive geysers with enough armor or health: Rangers need to be about level 8; Warriors about level 5; and other classes at least level 16. is still a reasonable rule of thumb.
I wouldn't be opposed to someone adding a line that says, e.g., if you add the serrated shield and/or + health items, you can survive at levels as low as ....Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 17:45, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
I didn't analyse all the combinations, obviously, but my best guess is that there is no way for a level 5 warrior to even come close to surviving, so that figure should be raised to at least 11. I'll add the note and fix the warrior number. Cynique 03:23, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
