Talk:Guide to playing as a monk
Sorry for my poor english, and maybe the article quickly become too hard for newbies. --Faena 14:45, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- Could be nice if we were able to provide some screenshots of effects of conditions on life bar. This is usually the best way to differenciate each condition, and it is really useful for monks. --Faena 12:14, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- While it might be useful I think it would be better as a section of conditions and hexes; identifying conditions and hexes is important for a monk, but it might also be important for other professions too. LordBiro 17:48, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- Sure, will try to do this when I have enough time to log in, unless someone has already done it ! --Faena 22:24, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

- With perfect pulling and aggro management - you are right. However a lot of the time something goes wrong and then it helps tremendously if that ele choses to the warrior as his next target, not the monk. --Xeeron 12:26, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
Should be added[edit]
- skills that are not so good
- positionning (kiting being a sub part)
- maybe a small part about smitting
- few tips on how to make a build (some basic rules like one condition removal, one hex removal, a few spells to deal with pressure, one spell to deal with spike, a rez ...)
Rewrite[edit]
Just a few minutes ago I started out to correct some stuff in the article, but then stopped. My realisation was, that the general format of the article seems unappropriate for a class guide. Currently, the article forcerides the reader though what is basically an extended skill list. If we want newbie players to start out with decent skill bars, having build articles (or simply linking to PvXwiki) would do a better job. What this page should be about is: How to play as a monk. It should describe situations a monk will commonly face and how to deal with them. And those situations include much more than having to select your skill bar.
If noone jumps on me here, I'll allocate some time to do a complete rewrite of this article soon. --Xeeron 15:42, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
- I would like to see that, Xeeron. I think there are certain parts of this article that are relevant, though -- part of playing a monk is understanding the skills, but you're right; it's much more than that. LordBiro 17:55, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
Adding organization to these guides[edit]
After comparing all of the great ideas in the sections in these Profession guides, I've tried to bring together a single format for all of them to use. The information has not been changed, but in some cases it has been reorganized so that readers will know what to expect across all guides.
Because of this, many guides will have incomplete sections. I believe this is worth it to have the great sections cover all of the guides and have more complete organization.
I’m adding this explanation to all of the guides’ Talk pages so everyone can see it regardless of which guide they see first.--Declan 20:52, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Synergy Removal?[edit]
Hey, I see that a bunch of skill synergy notes have just been removed in an edit titled "hexbreaker aria is the new meta". Notably, paragon has been changed to to a 'this secondary dosn't give any benefits' sort of notice. I don't get it? --Star Weaver 13:36, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
- Auron ate a jester for breakfast, but what he wants to say is: Using hexbreaker aria as a monk is a really bad idea and we should not suggest it here. --Xeeron 14:33, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
Empathy and Soothing Images[edit]
Monks should also consider choosing to be a Mesmer secondary profession, and bring along the skills Empathy and Soothing Images, in case a Warrior, or other melee enemy, tries to do away with a party's monk, and weaken the rest of the party.
Monks shouldn't bring empathy and soothing images. Waste of attribute spread and loss of focus.152.226.6.203 02:54, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
- I've cut the entire paragraph. The entire paragraph was off-topic, the smiting part is already covered in Special Case: Smiting, the Mesmer part is bad advice and Soothing Image only works against Warriors, not melee professions in general. -- Gordon Ecker 08:28, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
Hexes[edit]
I call that color purple, not pink... --Koda Kumi 16:53, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
Secondary Professions[edit]
I lol'd at about half of the suggested skills. a monk may want to take paragon as a second profession because of the ability to use a shield and the numerous defensive skills like "Never Surrender!" or Mending Refrain. --Gah Eat my uber regen. 16:11, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
- I added a line for the Mo/P combination that has overtaken JQ; it seems like half of every time consists of RoJ cappers with Fall Back and Make Haste. --Lurio Mystras | talk 01:43, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
Unyielding Aura?[edit]
After reading the line about Rebirth and it's awesome 1337 h4xxorz use in PvE, should it be noted that Unyielding Aura is a more powerful form of it as it has a healing bonus and requires only 5 energy? Also it is ideal to be used in combat. -- Swift Aura 13:01, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
- Yes. I am pretty sure that part dates back to before the Unyielding change. Obviously the drawback of it being elite should be mentioned as well. --Xeeron 15:37, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
- I added Unyielding Aura as an alternative to Rebirth. Swift Aura 14:01, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
Using a Shield[edit]
This was stated twice and only a couple paragraphs apart. Perhaps one of them should be removed? Daeheru 14:21, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
Misleading[edit]
This guide is slightly misleading in the sense that it makes the monk responsible for all heals, when in reality, the prot minimizes damage taken BEFORE it is taken, the healer pushes bars back up from what the prot misses, and party heals are left strictly to your flag runner. At no time should any team bring Heal Party on their heal monk in any PvP situation outside of Heroes Ascent on a Healer's Boon monk... 67.236.186.20 02:52, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
Basic Knowledge section[edit]
Is unnecessary and ugly. First, it is an ugly bullet point list of wiki links, most of which are linked to again down below. Second, the content is really bad. Is this REALLY the first thing new players should read when looking at this article? Why would a monk need to know how to make a build? He can D/L one from pvx and be just as effective (likely more effective). Why would he have to read about some niche builds that are 3 years old and hardly used anymore. Why would he have to look at a huge list of all possible staffs in the game. That section is 100% about just mentioning all monk related wiki topics and 0% about stuff that new monk players actually need to know.
I'll revert back to the old atribute description. --Xeeron 11:51, 12 February 2011 (UTC)
