There are 2 places near Kunvie where mobs of 3 Oni appear. Additionally there are several patrols of the various Jade Sea monsters that need to be dealt with, including one other mob of Salt Spray Dragons, either by pulling or timing your attack. It is possible to pull the Salt Spray Dragons out of Kunvie's mob, but this can also bring Kunvie so being prepared for it is the best choice of action. Keep your party spread out, and expect to take some losses. When ready to attack, stay committed on Kunvie. There is no easy way to do it, concentrate on taking down this behemoth, focussing all your firepower and worry about resurrecting later. Damage reducing and negating skills, such as Reversal of Damage, Divine Intervention, and such are quite useful here.

Also consider bringing Pain Inverter. Combined with a minion master in your party (you'll pass several explotable mobs before getting to the boss) and the bosses area of effect damage he can take quite a huge hit from pain inverter and Death Nova's as the minions explode...
