Does anyone have an experience if Shadow Refuge is better than Troll Ungent? ShadowFog 16:09, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
- Both have a 3 second delay before reapplying is possible, but Troll Unguent is more susceptible to interruption. Once applied, however, Troll Unguent cannot be removed. Nevertheless, even if Shadow Refuge is stripped, you are still healed. Overall, I'd have to say Shadow Refuge is superior. Less casting time means you can be doing something else with those spare two seconds, and the bonus healing should help tide you over until you can recast. Keeping it up will demand more energy, though, due to its shorter duration and ineligibility to benefit from Expertise. -- Hercanic 08:08, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Buff[edit]
- This skill recently recieved a buff so it can be constant while a ranger is sustaining heavy damage, which is useful.
- However, an additional buff would be nice, this is one of the most awkward heals in the game, and its made on the basis that a ranger should only have to use it out of combat, sice they are backline and therfore not ment to sustain long-term pressure damage.three secconds to chug an elixer seem insane, to me. Taking away some regen and then putting a heal on the end is just the same as having it only regen...so basically u want troll unguent to have a shorter cast time. Its fine the way it is--Justice 18:58, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- Not really, you have to run away from the fray or else you'll get interrupted by some crazy interrupter. Basically if your Warrior/Ranger (which many people are) you'll have to stop tanking for a second, in which your team can get killed. Conclusion: It's useful in PvE because PvE mobs don't have that many interrupts and the one that do take the ones with a long recharge. PvP, however, is a different story.
Actually, I love this skill, and have found a way to tank with a ranger primary, using this, any of the 75% block stances, a speed boost skill, and condition removal. while I stand around for 1-2 minutes like this, my teamates all kill the 15 plus enemies I have aggroed (unless the enemies are assasins... stupid dinosaur raptor things) Mcdertr 20:03, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
- Why would you use this when you're a tank, when you have monks standing behind you? Seriously, this is one of the worst healing skills out there (in combat) because of it's long activation time. - You forgot to mention these reasons as well.
- The cast time is 3 seconds and as a result this skill is very prone to interruption, especially by mesmers and other spell casters
- Most of the time, you're killed before you experience the full effects of the skill.
- Rangers have no other viable healing skills.
- Takes approximately 13 seconds to experience the full effect.
- You don't play a ranger so you wouldn't know.

Idea for Buff[edit]
It's quite simple actually, reduce the cast time to 2 seconds and the duration to 12 seconds. This would allow a slightly quicker self-heal for rangers and still balance it with the fact that any half-asleep interrupter could interrupt it. Psychiatric Consultant 14:40, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
I agree. The activation time needs to be shorter. Most ppl use a heal when theyre in a pinch, not when they think they might possibly need it and active it now just to wait it out and see if it was the right call. and considering this is one of three direct self healing skills that rangers have, I'd like pick this over lugging around a pet to use Heal as One or Companionship, but its almost not worth it. Despite having a pet hinders your abilities as it is with the way theyre set up, the heal is still so much more reliable. 3 seconds is way too long for bad shit to happen haha --70.162.177.57 09:54, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
- Or, you could learn how to stop sucking at guildwars, and 1)run away like all rangers are good at, then heal 2)use monks 3)use stances to get it up. 2 energy, unstrippable, decent duration and regen especially on a character that is so mobile and hardy deserves a 3 second cast to balance the scales. - Absolutely not, have you ever played a ranger before? Lol. When I play my wrack mesmer I interrupt that wayyy to easily. I run for 2 seconds when I see a ranger and then rupt him and laugh because I know he doesn't have another healing skill. Good for Warriors Too!!![edit]
Contrary to popular belief, this skill is also good for Warriors. Why? Because if you use Shield Bash or, even better, Wary Stance, to block interrupts, then well there's nothing bothering you from casting this skill. - In PvE you use Healing Breeze, Vital Boon + Signet of Pious Light, Healing signet, Natural Healing. It's that simple. Troll Unguent is just a bad skill. I use it on trappers only, for a quick +10 hp regen. Ninjas In The Sky 07:35, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Question[edit]
Does anyone know why it was called TROLL unguent? I can see why the unguent applies, but why troll? Couldn't it have been something a little more blunt, like recovery unguent or healing unguent, or even ranger's unguent. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:Jumpboy88 (talk).

- In most fantasy mythos, trolls have natural regeneration abilities. An unguent is pretty much like an ointment. So it basically means regenerative ointment.
