  1. The history of the Norn is a history of individuals.

    This story is no different.

Few Norn can claim to have effected the race as much as Signy. She faced down a foe that to this day has not been matched, engaged in a hunt which both claimed and gave her more then she ever wanted.

This is the story of the woman who calmed the Wild Hunt.

  2. Signy was a relative nobody when she began to chase the entity known as the Wild Hunt.

All she had to go on initially were legends and whispers, of a deadly force flowing through the Shiverpeaks, stalking the Norn and absorbing beasts into it's ferocious host. Few survived an attack, and thus clues as to where it's lair could be found were sparse.

She heard word of a hearth located not far from the newly built homestead of Sven's Bulwark that had done the impossible - they had resisted the attack of the Wild Hunt.

She strode into town just as night was falling, forced to spend the night in rest.

  3. Signy spent the evening gathering her knowledge. The Hunt had attacked several times, but those by the hearth didn't have much idea as to what it was.

They had a different legend though - one of a Norn who abandoned the spirits and sought to tame the darkness of the storm. The fire was stoked heavily as a storm whipped up, nothing new in the Shiverpeaks, but caused the Norn to move towards their houses. One of the group motioned for Signy to follow, leading to his own home, asking her to stay put, as he hurried out the door.

She gazed out the window, as the northern lights seemed to drift towards the ground...

  4. The cry of battle rang out, and Signy ran to meet it. Loosing arrows from her bow as easily as breathing, she expected the beast to fall to ground. Several of the arrows missed as the creatures raced into the hearth, the ones hitting home seemed to do little damage.

The Norn around showed her then how they'd defeated the previous ones, flaying the enchantment from them. Dis-empowered, the creature went down quickly. Signy looked to the spirit of Raven, who helped her part the storm in order to pass. Tearing off into the night, she quickly caught up to some of the creatures, putting them out of their torment. For her efforts, Wolf lent her the ability to track the storm.

    Then the real hunt began.

  5. As Signy stood overlooking the Stormfeild Slopes, she felt a shiver of dread go down her spine. Across the entire peak the ground was barely visible due to the snowstorm, small flashes of colored light indicating the presence of the Hunt. Stifling her fear, Signy used the wolf's blessing to track down the Hunt's lair. The snowstorm inside refused to let up, so she traveled to the shrine of the Bear to ask her for her strength.

The Hunt beat her to it. Valiantly driving off the creatures, she entreated Bear for help. In gratitude, Bear gave her an ability now common, but unheard of in her day - becoming the bear.

With this new found power, Signy strode confidentially into the Lair of the Hunt, and engaged it in combat. Although it threw all of it's power at Signy, she managed to break it, revealing the true source of the Hunt - a Norn named Gudrun Praystalker. Determined to ensure the Hunt never returned, Signy ended Gudrun there and then.

  6. Once she defeated the Wild Hunt, Signy returned to the hearth to teach her brethren the gift of Bear.

Throughout her many years she was celebrated as a hero, known as one who had proved herself for life. She taught all Norn she encountered the skill she was bestowed by Bear, giving the Norn their signature ability. She could have stayed put, confident in her abilities and stopped to raise her children. But Signy was a hunter, and would never stop roaming. One day she walked out from a hearth and was never seen from again.

Over time, new stories eclipsed the old ones, as tales became legends. Her gift will live on in the heart of every Norn who walks Tyria.
