What Really Happened[edit]

So, recently Raine has had her sysophood removed by Aiiane, as a result of "bcrat discretion", assuming that the general community consensus of the RFA would be that Raine isn't very useful in her position, and really hasn't done much but ban a few people a while ago. Raine is more than welcome to submit another RFA if she believes that Aiiane is wrong about what the community would do in the case of a full RFC, but apparently, doing so really wouldn't be worthwhile.

Anyway, all in all I feel pretty bad about what's happening here, not only because Raine is a friend of mine, but also because I had a direct involvement in the events that led up to her RFA, by Felix.

On May 3rd, an anonymous IP reverted an edit by TEF, who I've recently grown somewhat fond of. I know that in general, edits by TEF are in high quality, and rarely deserve to be reverted, though in some cases, they may need to be fixed up and modified. Anyway, I went and reverted the IP's revert, not thinking at the time that I would need to justify myself against an IP, and merely placing "nope" in the edit summary. I'd gone through the process of reverting IP's before, I rarely need to be that specific about why I'm reverted. Perhaps here, I was frustrated, or simply didn't see any reason why my revert would be subjected to objection. I'm not sure, it was probably a bad decision on my part.

Immediately after my revert, a user by the name of "Iron Fireforge", a rather new user, reverted my restoration of TEF's edit. At this point, I immediately knew two things;

  1. This guy was probably socking.
  2. A consensus wasn't going to be reached, and this situation was probably going to end up breaking 1RR.

I promptly notified TEF of what was going on, if it hadn't been noticed already. At this point, the revert by "Iron Fireforge" was once more reverted by TEF, with the edit summary (which I should've made in the first place), stating; how about some discussion (or at least a reason) before reverting". I had hoped that this would be enough to stop the reverting, at this point nobody but the IP had reverted 1RR (via socking), and it should've been made quite clear that we weren't going to allow TEF's changes to be removed without a reason.

Apparently, the IP understood that a reason was required for us to accept the removal of TEF's changes, but what it failed to realize was that a legitimate, clear reason would be required - not a reason that would be difficult to read, and impossible to take seriously. Once more, the IP reverted the page, but this time under a different user name, "OverKill", literally a brand new account created specifically for the reason of revert warring without breaking 1RR if not caught. He should've known that it would be glaringly obvious what he was doing, but I suppose he didn't.

At this point, I decided not to revert the page once more, in fears of perhaps getting banned for 1RR myself. Instead, I placed this request for a partial protection of the page on the admin noticeboard; at the time, I was unsure that requesting an IP ban for the IP who was socking was the best request, because I personally had no way of confirming that he was socking to break 1RR myself, other than suspicions. In addition to this, I placed the first section here on the IP's talk page, and the talk pages for Overkill, and Iron_Fireforge. The section was an overview of the events at the time, an explanation of the 1RR rule, and a statement containing my suspicions of sock puppetry.

Afterwards, I alt+tabbed into Guild Wars, which I had left open over the course of these events, realizing that there was nothing more I could do but wait for an admin to deal with the situation. Upon pressing "n", and opening my friendlist, I saw that Raine was online, and asked her if she could protect a page for me. She responded by asking me; "Which one?", at which point I told her the Lucky and Unlucky article. At no point did I mention the section I placed on the admin noticeboard, at no point did I mention to her that I suspected sock puppetry. At the time, Raine was in a match at AB as a monk (we all know you can't afk monk, not even for a second), and I told her that; "There's really no rush or anything." Why is this important to note? Well;

  1. Raine was busy doing personal tasks while I requested her to do something on wiki for me.
  2. She didn't have time to investigate into the situation, and I failed to fully inform her what I knew.
  3. I actually told her that it isn't a pressing matter, as a result, she went and did exactly what I requested her to do after she finished her match in AB. Afterwards, she went back to what she was doing.
  4. I didn't mention to Raine that she should restore TEF's edits prior to/after reverting. As a result, she didn't know to do this, and didn't do it either.

This is further highlighted in importance because Raine is a friend of mine, it isn't unreasonable for her to have acted the way she did after I asked her to do something. Had someone else asked, I'm sure she would've looked more carefully, had someone else asked, I'm sure she wouldn't have ever been involved if she was busy with someone else. In short; Raine trusts me, and I failed to make good use of that trust.

After Raine protected the Lucky and Unlucky article just like I asked her to, Auron went and banned User:OverKill, User:Iron_Fireforge, and the IP 24.20.169.232, after confirming my suspicion of sock puppetry. He did not undo Raine's protection of the Lucky and Unlucky page, despite the fact that he fully resolved the situation after Raine protected it. Note that Raine unprotected the page and restored TEF's edits sometime later.

After everything, the individual who had been banned circumvrented their ban, claiming innocence (that he did not break 1RR, and that he was not the other the IP, and other user, did not sock), and calling Auron an incompetent sysop, and saying that he was favoring myself, and TEF. Auron explained the ban, and then proceeded to ban the (what was assume is a proxy) IP used to circumvent the existing ban.

At this point, I was quite drained from the entire situation, and proceeded to play AB with Raine, and two other people I know who aren't notable on the wiki. Sometime after one of our matches, I pointed out to Raine that the same individual had circumvented their ban once more, and placed a section on the administrator noticeboard that Auron was being incompetent. Raine did her best to explain that she had performed a checkuser, and that Auron had, in fact, rightfully banned all of the accounts due to socking and 1RR. The individual requested that Raine "show [them] checkuser". At this point (probably due to frustration, and not wanting to waste any more time with the matter), Raine blocked the (presumably, another proxy) used by the individual to circumvent their existing block.

After this, we went and played one last match in Alliance Battles, and Raine, quite tired (keep in mind she lives in the UK) decided to go to bed much earlier than she usually does. Before she left for good, I came back to wiki to the notification that I have new messages on my talk page. So I clicked that, scrolled down, and found this. I stopped Raine from leaving, and told her that the individual had circumvented a block once again. She blocked the individual, and left to go to bed. Why does this matter?

  1. Raine was legitimately pretty tired, she wanted to leave much earlier than she usually does, and as a result, didn't want to deal with this situation (which had spanned out over several hours), much more than she already had.
  2. Because she was tired, she didn't bother checking the last IP's contributions, or talk page.
  3. When I had told her that the individual went and circumvented his block once again, I knew she was about to leave, and the individual could possibly go unblocked and cause more damage in the time it would take for another sysop to deal with it. As a result, I didn't check the contributions, or her talk page, either.

I proceeded to remove the comment from my talk page, calling it"spam".

About half an hour later, Felix, came and implied that the edit was made by him, and not the individual reverting the Lucky and Unlucky pages. He had intended the comment on my talk page to be humorous, and I suppose to an extent, if the situation would've been different, it could've been. However, I personally think that Felix needs to realize that due to the nature of his "joke", Raine's reaction at the time was perfectly reasonable. That's probably the most important reason I'm writing this.

Note: As far as I know, Felix's University IP address is still wrongfully blocked for the full duration. I've told people to correct this, but as of yet, nobody has

As a result of Raine's actions, Felix went and RFC'd Raine. I honestly don't think that Raine deserves to be subject to what happened to her, and I personally take all responsibility for what happened. I feel terrible about it, and although I'm aware that perhaps Raine would've been RFC'd at some point anyway, that what I did caused it to happen much earlier than it should've.

Felix, (and, really everyone) I'd like it if you'd take this into consideration, and perhaps change your mind about Raine's RFC. But I realize that may not be likely, or even possible at this point.

Raine, I'm sincerely sorry for what I did, and I can only hope that you can find it in your heart to forgive me. User Ryuu R.jpgRyuu  *bite* 19:21, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
