Perhaps the best bit of advice I can give you at the moment is to use Wyn's templates or something similar, until you familiarize yourself with wiki-code. To use one of these templates, copy and paste the part that in the Usage section that look like:

{{User:Example/Character template
ExampleParameter1 = 
ExampleParameter2 =
ExampleParameterN =
}}

onto your user page. Remember to fill in the parameters, too.
Also, while editing your userpage, make sure you use Show preview when you want to view what you have done and edit it further. Using Save page several times within a small timeframe will "clutter" the Recent Changes and will upset some fellow editors. :p
