User talk:Neithan Diniem/Template/Weapon infobox

Seeing as how this discussion has yet to have been started by anyone, Ill post something here then. This is a slight change to the Weapon infobox that unobstructively permits the displaying of two item images, one being the in-game image, the other being a rendered version. Due to the discussion that was carried out here, I chose to try to remedy the situation. The infobox as it is here can be placed over the existing template for the weapon infobox without breaking any of the pages. In order to implement the new features, I or others would need to simply go to weapon pages and add-in the required variables and re-link the weapon images. I know that several people (one in particular) have put alot of work into making these rendered images, and their work should not be discarded. However, neither should the requests of many others for the return of the non-rendered images when we have the means to provide for both. This system works, as you can see below:

  • Image removed due to it causing this page to be added to those categories, which this page has no reason to be. If you wish to see the preview, simply use the template and preview the edit. That, or just look in recent changes.

The only problem being that I do not know how to link to a archived image. If anyone else would have any words to add to this discussion, feel free to contribute.--Neithan DiniemUser Talk:Neithan Diniem 00:42, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

I love the addition of rendered images, especially as the pics captured in game give perspective and atmosphere for the item, but not always the clarity. G R E E N E R 22:36, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
Fantastic work! There's always been a debate about renders vs screenshots, and this would help ease it. Is there any possibility such a thing could be applied to NPCs? ShadowRunner 22:39, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
Yea, Ive already made one just yesterday for NPCs when I saw a debate about it being put up on the request for comments page. You can see it here. It follows the same design and usage, and still doesn't break the existing template. Overall I'm thinking about a slight redesign for it, providing for the expandable area and the headline area to be separated if I can, allowing for the shown image's background to be white. Also, in case there is any future questions, the rendered and screenshot images could be switched in the template after a few changes, allowing for the rendered image to be shown primarily and the screenshot to be hidden in the expandable. In my opinion having both images is a perfectly valid thing, as renders don't capture the scale of the object to the user, nor some of the details. Ive seen a few times where renders end up taking away something from the item, such as an animated lightning bit or whatnot, and that is lost to the page viewers. Screenshots would provide for a perfect view of the item as it is provided in the game. That is why I feel that the current rendering project to replace screenshot images should be slightly changed to be a project aimed at an addition to the screenshots. That's my 2 cents worth at least.--Neithan DiniemUser Talk:Neithan Diniem 02:09, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
Toss up an example of what you meant above. I enjoy the look of the template as it stands, and while the option to choose which picture gets shown as primary is interesting, I fear it will lead to a few too many revert wars. Perhaps keep the in-game pic as standard. G R E E N E R 17:29, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
The ability to choose what image would be shown would be a consensus and then implemented in the template, not choice upon changing a variable (though it would be easily possible) that decides what image is placed where. Ill work on the example later today when Im back from work. Ive got an idea for the images that I want to try.--Neithan DiniemUser Talk:Neithan Diniem 22:11, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

Alright, I added a border into the expandable, defining the edge of the image there slightly, however I was unable to do exactly what I wanted to due to the cellpadding/spacing placed into the entirety of the template. Not sure what Id do to fix it except add padding variables to each orange boxes. If anyone is able to replicate the current look using paddings instead of cellpadding/spacing their welcome to try. Now however all that remains is to decide on if the main image shown should be the rendered image or the screenshot image (personally, I cant decide. ATM im leaning to placing the screenshot into the expandable box now). Once some opinions are made Ill make any needed changes and people could begin to use it if they wished. Any changes made to this template would be made to the NPCs box as well.--Neithan DiniemUser Talk:Neithan Diniem 01:00, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Any more updates on this? G R E E N E R 22:23, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, MAJOR change of pace at my place with a new job(~4 days weekly w/ 6-10 hrs, overnight and/or daytime), college (14 hours monday and wednesday), and a trip I had to take. Havn't had time to work on it like I promised. Ill get on to it very soon though.--Neithan DiniemUser Talk:Neithan Diniem 01:44, 27 September 2010 (UTC)
OK, Due to me having little time right now, Ill name this project of mine finished (call it a V1.0 if you will...). If anyone wants to start implementing it, feel free. If you have any changes/suggestions for it, make them on another page and link it here. Ill be keeping an eye on it. When I get time to work on it more I will do so, and should anything I do effect any of this template's uses, I will personally go through and fix the problems. Ill get around to it, I just need some time to get my head straight right now.--Neithan DiniemUser Talk:Neithan Diniem 05:00, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
