Suggestion:

First of all I think that weapons and armors should have more stats attached to them.So armors would have-Overall defense(amount of damage absorbing)Magical resistance(amount of magic absorbing)and speed(weight)and Critical defense(defense against critical attacks). Armors like leather would be lighter providing more speed to character and vice versa. Same goes for weapons-Overall damage(damage dealt/output),Attack speed(delay between attacks),Critical(overkill)Speed(weight)and range(for bows and guns). Lighter weapons like rapier will have more attack speed, give more to overall speed and greater critical but less damage output.

When we dealt with that its time to move on weapon/armor crafting/upgrading.

Upgrading:

Upgrading your weapons would be done through gathering materials for it-so for example you would start with basic flintlock pistol and after some time you would feel that you want something better ie.dual-barrel gun or something else. Then you would venture into "unknown" and start gathering resources available for you-iron,platinum,crystals,diamonds,soul shards, wood, monster drops etc etc. and after you would have enough(both money and resources),you could buy your upgrade for your old weapon in your local shop, this would raise your stats and change appearance. Catch is in that you wouldnt buy new weapon through upgrading(though there are games that do it in this way)but only upgrade it with series of available upgrades-grips(for accuracy),barrels(for more bullets or damage) etc.

NOTE:Only NPCs could get you upgrades

So acquiring of your equipment would go through either buying it from local traders, exchange or upgrading and salvaging(this would get you minor items).

Armor-

Armour would consist of seven pieces:

  • Headgear
  • Chest
  • Shoulder
  • Arms
  • Legs
  • Boots
  • Accessories(belts,sacks,shields)

Swords would consist of three pieces:

  • Blade
  • Hilt
  • Accessories(scabbard)

Flintlock guns would consist of four parts:

  • Lock
  • Stock
  • Barrel
  • Accessories
