There is almost nothing more annoying in some MMO RPGs where jumping is possible than seeing people hopping around constantly either just to be annoying or because it is a slightly faster way to travel. I am proposing that there be some jumping mechanic which prevents or discourages this sort of behavior. A few simple ideas follow:

1. Do not cause jumping to slightly increase your speed. Players might still do it out of superstition (believing the jump does make them move faster) or to be annoying, but at least one motivation is removed. This would best be combined with one or more of the ideas below.

2. Create a little jump bar somewhere on the screen with about 4-8 dots on it. Each time a jump is performed, remove a dot. These dots recharge regularly but more slowly if you use all of them up at once. This should best be combined with idea 1 so that the dots aren't expended for speed boosts. It would all together prevent constant jumping but may put limits on level design because players could not jump more than 8 times consecutively.

3. If there is to be a stamina bar for any purpose, jumping might expend extra stamina.

4. Create enemies who pop out of the ground and beat the crap out of characters who were jumping when encountered. Jumping constantly might also trigger certain pop-up enemies who would sense the vibrations in the ground and be attracted to the prey. These enemies should be annoying (look here for inspiration) but not too powerful. Mandragor-like in other words.

5. If there is to be stealth, jumping might increase the size of a player's aggro bubble.

6. Include methods of moving more quickly and implement idea 1.

7. Include a delay after jumping during which a character must regain his balance.
