organize by type[edit]

Would anyone prefer the gallery be organized into different sections by type (short bows, recurve bows, etc.) or is the current scheme fine? This gallery is essentially the same as the gallery of ranger uniques so this question applies there too. Tedium 23:06, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

where is the dryad bow?

Wanted:Bow[edit]

Can anyone help me? I couldnt find it in that list, i once saw a bow that was wooden with blossem on it :] Anyone know the name of it? Thanks

Images are redirects which in turn makes things funky[edit]

Do excuse the lack of correct terms there :p

Half the images on the page link the larger image, while some of the others link to the article about the bow. Can we get some consistency here? It makes sense for the text underneath to go to the article page while the image goes to the image page, yet a bunch of reverts have just been done undoing this behavior. Is there some policy I'm not aware of concerning image links? If so, please do fill me in :) Thanks!

If you need to see an example of this: Koahm's_Flatbow click on the image and it just redirects to the page. You need a fair bit of wiki knowledge to know how to ignore the redirect and see the image in question.

Additionally, turning images into redirects specifically for a gallery page is a bad idea because it affects the entire wiki, not just the gallery. If you're looking at the weapon page and want to make the image larger, you click on it and ... get redirected right back to the weapon page. That's bad practice, and it breaks Help:Redirect: "There are several things to bear in mind for any redirect target (i.e. the page where you get redirected to). Most importantly, the redirect target should not confuse the reader. The content on the redirect target should not prompt the reader to wonder why they got redirected to that page. In other words, the redirection should be logical and the target page should attempt to explain why the reader got redirected, if it would not be otherwise obvious."
It's definitely possible to keep the "click on the image to get to the weapon page" functionality the gallery has; the best way to do that is to make the image a link, not to make the image a redirect. -JD 22:12, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
At the top of every page that you get to via redirect has a link to what redirected you. So if you click on Dragos Flatbow and it takes you to article about the bow there is a link at the top of the page that takes you to the image. I'm familiar enough with the way wikis work to know this, thank you. But not everyone is. Why make it more confusing when it doesn't need to be? Skill icons I can understand redirecting, as there isn't a higher-resolution version of them. But the thumbnailed pictures of weapons are so small they are hard to see, so they should not be redirected to a page that only includes the thumbnail. -JD 22:23, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
However coming from the bow's own page, you click the image of the bow...and get the same page with an additional link. The re-direct is only useful when coming via the gallary, but reduces functionality elsewhere. It is not necessary where the same functionality can be reached without breaking other pages by using images as links --HollyGen 22:27, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
I agree that redirects from the images to articles is a hindrance, and a particularly unnecessary one too when the images here already have links to their corresponding articles. I've asked Yo Jm (who seems to have made these redirects) why he made them since I don't think any formatting guideline says to do so, and the whole 'click-to-enlarge' thing isn't exactly unusual. --User Brains12 circle sig.png Brains12 \ talk 23:21, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
I made those redirects for if someone had that picture on their profile or something and it wasnt names, theyd click on it, and without fuss take them to the article, but i ran out of time so i didnt do all of them :P and just undo them if you like, sorry :P --Yo Jm Talk to me 06:32, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
Aha! Mystery solved! Yeah, I think it's best if they go straight to the image. If I catch any others I'll punt em back to the image. Thanks for clearing it up! :D Fae 06:38, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Elswyth's Recurve Bow[edit]

How come Elswyth's Recurve Bow isn't in the list, while it does belong to the Category:Unique recurve bows??? I have the feeling there's many many more bows that aren't shown here... Sjeng talk 16:52, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Fixed. Let me know if you find any others that are missing. (In case you're wondering, it needed to be added to Category:Marksmanship unique items.) -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 16:59, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
