Simplified buff and debuff types (Discussion)

The original Guild Wars has two types of strippable buffs (enchantments and stances, not counting non-stacking buff types like weapon spells), two types of strippable debuffs (conditions and hexes), as well as over a dozen skill types which can apply unstrippable buffs (once again, counting non-stacking buffs as unstrippable) and four skill types which can inflict unstrippable debuffs (skill, binding ritual, environment effect and nature ritual).

The following is a suggestion for a simplified buff and debuff system. Each effect is generally either physical or magical, either a buff or a debuff and either resiliant or non-resiliant. Buffs are indicated with colour-coded up arrows and debuffs are indicated with colour-coded down arrows, condition would be a general term for physical debuffs, while physical buffs would need a name. Resiliant buffs and debuffs cannot be stripped, resilience is indicated with a white border around the buff or debuff icon rather than a black border, they otherwise function the same as strippable buffs and debuffs. Additionally, there is a third class of buffs and debuffs, indicated with a silver up arrow or dark gray down arrow, these buffs and debuffs do not count as physical or magical effects for balance reasons, perhaps they could simply be called buffs and debuffs.

Why this is a good idea
  • If a buff's unstrippability is a problem, it can be flagged as strippable without messing with its' skill type.
  • Buff and debuff removal would be simpler.
  • Skills could be assigned non-stacking effect classes without altering their skill type.
Why it may not work out
