(Discussion)

This idea is simply to propose that all indoor areas be instanced environments, separate from the continuous world. One of the things I hated about Lineage 2 was how they handled buildings. Sure, you could go inside them, but the camera would be glitchy as hell, and the walls looked like they were made out of paper. More than that, it just didn't feel like I was inside a building. In Phantasy Star Universe, on the other hand, stores were instanced areas closed off by doors, and that worked and felt perfect (unlike several things in that game). As for markets in GW2, those could well be outdoors and I think that might actually be better than having stores, but special buildings such as inns, casinos, hair salons, auction houses, and perhaps even armories might work better as indoor instanced environments accessible through doors. These would act like town and outpost areas in GW1.

However, buildings accessed from the continuous world would act like explorable areas from the previous game(assuming that they are not stores or the like). These would be occupied by small groups of enemies which you would have to clear out. As a reward for this, you could plunder the building of its chests and containers which would be filled with items and gold of value proportionate to the difficulty of their retrieval to make each building worth exploring. Players, however, would not be able to retrieve these minor treasures from the same building within at least a twenty-four hour period to prevent farming. Others may simply be filled with peaceful occupants who can provide special services or information (similar to the Halcyon outside Calvalon in the Jade Sea). Also, many side-quests may require you to enter certain buildings. This would provide further incentive to explore them. All these buildings would need be large, tall structures as the high ceilings and wide-open spaces would be necessary for combat. Suitable examples would be several large buildings in Kaineng City and the towers of Watchtower Coast in Kryta.

Why this is a good idea
  • Would encourage exploration of the world to find all of the hidden treasures.
  • Would create more varied environments and allow for a different kind of atmosphere when needed.
  • The interior of a building would not need to match its outward dimensions exactly
  • Would eliminate all problems associated with presenting players with large and beautiful structures that cannot be entered
  • Helps camera problems associated with indoor areas
Why it may not work out
  • Would require the creation of numerous small, instanced areas scattered throughout Tyria which might pose technical problems
  • Would require the design of large buildings for every region
