Monthly Fee & Alternatives (Discussion)

To increase the game's income, a monthly fee should be introduced to improve the amount of content that is introduced into the game, as well as funding current improvements to GW1.

An alternative to this is to keep the game Subscription fRee but introduce advertisements into the game or on the main login screen.

Why this is a good idea
  •   The added income could raise the quality and quantity of things that would be introduced into the game
  •   Would make servers less populated and easier to maintain as less players would buy the game.
  •   My company, which has nothing to do with this game, will profit.
Why it may not work out
  • A lot of players may not be able to afford a monthly fee, the fact that there isn't one is considered the biggest incentive to buying the game in the first place.
  • Lots of people chose gw because you don't have to pay
  • Because it isn't really needed as long as they crank out expansions and bonus missions packs and stuff every year.
  • A major selling point of Guild Wars is that it has no monthly fee
  • This is not a good idea
  • No monthly fee is what I tell my friends and entice them to buy and play with me, what would I tell them if otherwise?
  • The idea came from a non-GW fan, who wants to sabotage the game. Shame on you. Go to your other games and let us be as "cheap" and "stupid" as we are.
  • NO, NO, AND NO!
  • Although ANET could definitely benefit from making a little extra profit, they wont make much of a profit when so few people will be willing to pay a monthly fee. They're immediate thought will be "Why am I paying for a game that just came out and might not be good after all, when I can pay the same for another, more popular game that is already well established." I don't play WoW because of the monthly fee, and I wont play GW2 if it has a monthly fee (and I'm not alone in this).
  • Less people buying a game means LESS profit for the game. Since when is less customers a good thing for a company?

Alternate Idea I - In-game Store

Extended In game Store of a few of the following: (Must be sort of cheap) a) Medium end Consumables, weaker than say essense of celerity, but more powerful than skale fin soup ($10 for 50?) b) Guild Hall Upgrades (10$ for 50k worth?) c) special Guild Cape designs drawn by You ($20 for a cape?) Inspected by Anet b4 post of course) d) special untradeable (or tradable.. depends) designed by you ($20 for 20 duplicates of weapon)

Why this is a good idea
  • My company, which has nothing to do with this game, will profit.
Why this may not work out
  • Read Mistake not to be repeated. There are lots of players who already hate consumables, introducing them into the game as a buyables from the ingame store = failed.
  • using real life money to buy upgrades in the game is just a no no.
  • I will not pay real money for an 'essence', or any other seemingly advantageous item that can be farmed. I'm not paying those sweat shops. I'll go play my game and earn my own essences for free.

Alternate Idea II - Factions

Allow players to register their own Factions/Kingdoms with an anarchy system for say... $20 and $10 a month, maybe +0.5$ per every member. Benefits is to allow players to gain another PvP for Besieging, and raiding. All those who are a part of the factions (only leader pays) can freely raid other factions for gold, loot, and fame. All those who are not a part of the factions may be hired as mercenaries to gain much smaller amounts of wealth , loot and fame. And of course the in game store may say sell siege equipments? buildings? for 10$ per 50k worth? If say the faction no longer pays subscription, then the faction will still exist, but will only function like that of an alliance hall. Any faction can attack/raid another faction at anytime even if they have no players. The faction leader can quickly buy either NPC mercenaries(pre-bought) or player mercenaries to defend. And a Mercenary Faction may form by having a say 20 Mercenary party to raid another faction. Problem is, they have no siege equipements, and thus will be difficult. Battles should be able to be watched by all much like the "B" button in current GW

Why this is a good idea
  •   My company, which has nothing to do with this game, will profit.
Why this may not work
  • Faction should be earned thru playing the game not buy with Real money.
  • There are many players who cannot afford to pay.
  • Players who can't afford are at the mercy of these "rich" players = failed
  • Why pay to start my own little 'kingdom' that would be highly unstable and can easily be uprooted, raided, pillaged, and looted by someone else who decided to pay more than I did? It would be like paying $20 of my real money to simply make a guild that can actually be hurt by other players.
