(Discussion)

One thing that has always annoyed me about MMO's is how they have monsters just scattered across the landscape, waiting to be killed. What are the monsters doing out there? Why are they in this area? Are they just relaxing, or are they out gathering food or something that monsters would do? I think that exploring the motivation behind monsters is a key step to introducing a high level of realism to gameplay, something that a lot of MMO's do not have.

Some ideas
  •  Bandits would only travel along roads in large groups, or lie in ambush, waiting for unsuspecting travelers to pass a certain location, and then jump out of the shadows.
  •  Unless they are solitary creatures, monsters would always roam in large packs, maybe with a scout who runs out ahead of them, and then back to the rest of group if they see anything suspicious or threatening (i.e. players or other enemies), and then make a decision to fight or evade based on their levels, etc.
  •  If the reason monsters are just milling about in a spot is because it's their territory, why wouldn't they set up a camp or something? Some kind of dwelling, or signs of living in one place (unless they are nomadic)--i.e. bones of eaten corpses, treasure, a fire, huts, flimsy kinds of dwellings, or whatever thing a certain type of monster would make.
  •  If you kill a monster patrol, and they aren't seen for a while or don't report back to their sentries or something, wouldn't the other monsters send out someone to check on them or a search party or raise the alarm if they found their bodies? (that is, if they are intelligent)
Why this is a good idea
  •  More dynamic gameplay
  •  Immersion
  •  Shows a higher level of care in creating environments, something that fans would appreciate
Why it may not work out
  •  Too much work?
  •  Poor implementation
