(Discussion)

The way GW2 works isn't the same as GW1 it's my understanding that GW2 will be soloable. so this means to me no party size limitations or requirment. If this is true then I don't see why you couldn't add your buddy to your friends list (or guild rouster) then right click on his name and click open portal. This would open up a portal to your friend that you can walk into and it would take you next to your buddy weahter you buddy is in an instance, town, or explorabe area. If the person is in an instance and only designed for how ever many ppl started the instance just raise the monster count, monster health, and/or monster armor.

Why this is a good idea
  •  lets say you want to play with your buddy and you pm him/her to come play. But he/she says "I am vanquishing right now but after I am done I will join up with you." well the heck with that. just portal to your buddy and start playing instantly.
  •  Planning wouldn't be such a big deal anymore. If you were planning on doing UW or something that night you wouldn't have to say "well lets wait for INSERT BUDDY'S NAME HERE to show up before we start." You could just start then he can join up when he gets there.
  •  In this case the player could come in the current team and replace a Hero or a Hench without affecting the game too much.
  •  Weak characters joining powerful team could be easily limited with permissions like in Arenas in GW1
Why it may not work out
  •  Mission/progress completion. I don't think it would be fair to be able to port into a mission that's almost complete that that user needs and kill one guy and get a mission/quest completed. However if that person joined in at 5 mins on a 1 hour dungeon I think it's fair to give him the completion. To solve this problem you could have completion indicators that tell you how far the party is along in the mission/quest/dungeon and if they are past a certain point it would give the guy createing a portal a message saying somethig like this "Party is past point of mission completion. Do you want to continue?" this lets the user know that they won't get credit for the mission.
  •  Another potential problem would be a level 1 trying to portal to a level 60 in the level 60 area. well that level 1 guy is just going to be a nuisance for the team. he will die contantly and provide almost no help to the party. To solve this problem you could have portal area's meaning you have had to been to those places before/ or at least that map section. if the user hasn't been to this spot yet give them a message like "Party is out of your portal reach." Letting the user know that they need to get further along before they can portal to that spot. HAHAHA DISREGARD THAT, SIDEKICK SYSTEM.
