Idea (Discussion)
Players and/or guilds should be able to purchase sea-going vessels that can be used to explore the open seas. The ships should be able to hold a group of players, say a maximum of 8 or 16 (depending on the size of the ship) and should be able to offer ship to ship combat. During combat, players can have the ability to steal the enemy's ship until docking. Stealing an enemy ship should provide loot. PVE Missions could easily be dedicated to this type of gameplay, requiring a player to rid a particular portion of the high seas of its not-niceties to allow for safe travel through that area.
Actual purchase of ships should be expensive, and not required to continue the game. Thus, it can be something that guilds own as a way of providing enhanced gameplay to their members, while not forcing individuals to bear the burden of the heavy cost of a ship. Perhaps to allow individuals to play on ships whenever they choose, after completing some quests they could offer their services to various NPCs to be hired as "privateers" for repeatable quests or just sailing around and killing stuff.
Fighting other ships should not be the only way to fight on a ship, either, there should be sea monsters, coastal towns to raid, etc.
Maybe there could be another continent, like Utopia that you could only get there by boat.
- Why this is a good idea
- Provides a whole new aspect of gameplay not seen in other MMOs
- Totally doable with today's technology
- Would help let Gaile live out her fantasy of being a pirate
- Able to explore new islands, reefs, etc.
- (If fishing is added as a hobby) You can find new and better places to fish in the ocean.
- New type of Raid
- Ties in with Elona's Corsairs and that storyline.
- If they make more customizable Guild Halls, you could possibly buy a dock on your Guild island where the ship would go.
- this works for both sea battle and sea travel there could be speacial pvp boat arenas and mabe this is how we get from continant to continent. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEQjxQ8NSx4

- Why it may not work out
- Would be a pretty big undertaking to do right, and it may not really fit the currently-planned storyline, though it could be planned for subsequent expansions
- Mechanics of fighting other ships might be difficult to perfect, especially aspects like boarding enemy ships and aiming cannon fire.
- If ship is piloted manually, inexperienced people can get lost in the endless ocean :(
- If the world is "complete" at launch (i.e. having Elona and Cantha as well as Tyria), and given the plot points cutting them off, especially creative players could find ways around these "walls". On the same coin, especially evil players could drive others to instant doom.

Battle at Sea(Disscussion)
Underwater combat may be a bit odd or unrealistic. However, battle on a moving ship would be an exciting way to incorporate the ocean environment in a reasonable manner. While the ship is at sea, various amphibious creatures could jump on board and you would have to fend them off. Another feature could be large underwater creatures as large as the ship itself. In such a situation, the crew would have to use weapons on the ship, such as harpoons or cannons, to defeat it. However, these weapons should be more interactive than the trebuchets in the original Guild Wars.
- Why this is a good idea
- Incorporates the sea in a more realistic and developer friendly way
- Provides players with new battle situations
- Why it may not work out
- Hard to program stormy seas or ship movement possibly? <--But perhaps possible with the new Z-Axis
- No place to sail to really. <--Or a way to fight the orrian dragon / sailing in the Giant Basin
- Would interfere with Pirates of the Caribbean Online? <-- How would this interfere with a game without correlation to GW2, and why does PotCO matter to GW2?
