Assassins currently don't fit the model that they were originally created to fulfill in PvE. The "get in, get out" motif isn't used because it isn't necessary or useful in a party. I would like to suggest 2 ways to fix this.

  1. Nerf Critical Agility by removing it's additional armor. Assassins aren't supposed to be tanks. That was Anet's mistake with Shadow Form and Nightfall. Assassin's are meant to be fast and efficient, yet lightweight, killers. The problem is that their shadow steps never gave them the ability to actually do that.
  2. Buff Shadow Steps. Currently, shadow steps aren't useful enough to be part of an assassin's mainbar. They're fine for running or the occasional Warrior hammer build but that's about it. If we buffed shadowsteps, so that they provided that element of surprise on enemies, then they would see more usage.

Here are a few skill suggestions, along this thought (PvE only) -

  • By adding a conditional cripple that, considering the circumstances, would always trigger in HM, you can give the assassin back that feel of "sneak in, get out". It's like "Surprise! Our assassin crippled you and now here's our AoE" and it provides the assassin a way to get out by kiting.
  • Move to Critical Strikes, Move Assault Enchantments to dagger mastery
  • Make AoD an actual elite in PvE. It's useless, currently. This version of AoD would make sins what they're supposed to be, low armored surprise attackers. This gives you a chance to shadow step in, KD all the foes, attack for a bit, and shadow step out while again knocked down all the foes. This would provide an excellent opportunity for a sin to have control of a mob, while not being a tank.
  • Shadow Meld -1 Tango-upkeep.png 5 Energy 1/4 Activation time 20 Recharge time Elite Enchantment Spell. Shadow Step to target other ally. While you maintain this enchantment, you and target other ally take 50% less damage from physical attacks. When you stop maintaining this Enchantment, you return to your original location.
Kind of like Dark Escape except it would only be against physical damage and it would be maintainable. There is a chance that this could be exploited by bonders or bonder heroes; however, the recharge makes it an undesirable fit for any team farm build, and it's elite status would prevent most players from bonding with it.
  • Shadow of Haste 5 Energy 25 Recharge time Stance. For 5...19...22 seconds you move 50% faster than normal. When Shadow of Haste ends, you shadow step to your original location.
  • Why not make Shadow of Haste faster in PvE? It eventually ricochets you anyway, so it would rarely be used for running (it would be pretty annoying to run with). This would be a big no-no for PvP. Too many ways to exploit. However, there's no reason not to have a 50%, limited, rebounding speed burst in PvE.

Those are just a few ideas of things that sins' Shadow Steps should be doing. Get in, get out.
