A character's movement speed can be increased through the use of various skills, and occasionally by environmental effects or consumable items. Speed boosts can be stacked, but movement rate is capped at 34% faster than normal. The skills Burning Speed, Pious Haste, Junundu Tunnel and Dash break this rule, allowing a character to move faster than the 34% cap.
Speed boosts can be thought of as the opposite of snares. A skill that causes a speed boost is often referred to as an IMS, short for "increased movement speed" (similar to IAS for attack speed).
Game mechanics[edit]
Monks, Necromancers and Ritualists have no speed boosting skills.
- Since the February 5, 2019 update, heroes will not use several party-wide speed boosts (e.g. "Fall Back!", "Incoming!" and "Charge!") at the same time, therefore avoiding the cap of +34% to movement speed.
- Aggro will be lost more quickly when a character has multiple effects on them that stack to the cap of 34% vs when they have a single +33% effect, even though the movement speed is nearly the same due to the cap.
General overview of speed boosts[edit]
- Stances. Many stances provide a personal speed boost.
- Shouts. Some shouts augment the movement rate of allies.
- Pet skills. Speed boosting skills in the beast mastery line can augment the movement rate of a pet, or both the pet and its master.
- Enchantment spells. Several enchantments boost caster's speed. Windborne Speed can also be cast on teammates.
- Environmental effects. In Alliance Battles, players that enter the range of an Attack Point that their team controls will receive a speed boost from Battle Cry.
- Consumables. Some speed boost sweets can only be used in outposts/towns and cause Sugar Jolt or Sugar Rush. Birthday Cupcake, Blue/Green/Red Rock Candy, and Essence of Celerity provide speed boosts in PvE.
- Other skill types:
- Hasty Refrain is an echo that boosts an ally's speed.
- Shameful Fear is a hex that boosts the target's speed.
- The Nature Ritual, Muddy Terrain, is the only skill that negates speed boosts.
Application by game type[edit]
PvP[edit]
- Tactical movement, e.g. ganking, kiting, or returning from an overextended position. For example, Monks will use Dark Escape to escape and reduce damage while they do so.
- Counter-tactics: e.g. to catch-up to kiting enemies.
- Specialized uses
- Flag running in Guild versus Guild
- Relic running in Heroes' Ascent, particularly "Make Haste!".
PvE[edit]
- Runners use speed boosts to escape aggro.
- Flag running: helps complete quest objectives during certain missions by moving bundles quickly.
- Tactical movement, e.g. kiting and maneuvering.
- In Hard mode, foes move 33-50% faster than normal.
