Fix the worst bits of Hero AI[edit]
(This idea (and several of its particulars) was stolen — with permission — from Morgaine, who hasn't (yet?) created a relevant formal suggestion.)
There are more issues with Hero (and other NPC combat-AI) than can be addressed in a lifetime, so this is more about taming the most obvious and annoying elements.
- Wasted resources: NPCs should not waste fire-power on low-level foes. When a party member decides to kill an L5 animal (for bounty points), Vekk shouldn't cast Meteor Shower when the critter can be wanded to death.
- Wasted opportunities: NPCs should take advantage of certain skill effects by recasting the skill before the effect expires, e.g. Aura of the Lich, Masochism, and Double Dragon
- Delay of game: Heroes shouldn't cast Frozen Soil unless there are foes within compass distance. This is especially annoying immediately after a battle when you have one dead party member and your hero summons the spirit before you can cancel the action.
- Don't stand so close to me: Squishy NPCs shouldn't risk entering the battle scrum to use a touch skill on an ally. It's one thing for a well-armored Meloni to use Test of Faith on Koss, but suicidal (and wipe-catalyzing behavior) when Ogden tries to use Mending Touch on Jora.
- Friends of my friends are (supposed to be) my friends: NPCs tend to delay using support skills (notably Union or Shelter) if they aren't within weapon-range of foes, even though their allies would benefit. This is particularly annoying when you have deliberately flagged a protection hero in a safe spot, e.g. around the corner from some archers.
