Guild Wars Wiki talk:Spelling

Thought I would have a bash at proposing a guideline. So any thoughts? :) --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 21:09, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Just checking, are you aware of the discussions at Guild Wars Wiki:Use American English and Talk:Main Page/March-April 2007#Policy on use of British English/American English spellings?
Personally, I disagree with this proposal even as a guideline. With the exception of rewriting spellings which break wiki links (though creating redirects would, IMHO, be better), I don't think there's a need for this kind of guideline. The names of creatures/places/skills are going to be the same anyways. At most I'd accept this as a "When quoting from the game, be exact in the spelling" guideline, but no further. --Dirigible 21:24, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
I was aware of the failed policy, I thought maybe in guideline form it would be more acceptable. I dislike the way different spellings are used throughout the wiki, I mean I am English! but I personally think consistency is better then "correctness" in this case ;) As a guideline it is not demanding it of editors, but if they were wondering which is preferred this would indicate that to them. --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 21:36, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
I don't mind it as a guideline (but I'd change some of the wordings, later) but I would like it to be stressed that one should not make an edit for the sole purpose of changing words from British spelling to American spelling. Also make some allowances for articles that specifically deal with translations like Localized commands and emotes. It may be better to expand this guideline to include grammar as well, such as adding the "sic" for in-game grammar errors. Maybe a reference to GWW:REDIRECT too. -- ab.er.rant sig 01:41, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
Strong no for copied text. We should keep it verbatim. Mark it with {{sic}} if needed.
Don't think it's warranted for our texts either, as long as they are consistent. But that goes for more than Americanisms, such as tense and perspective. Backsword 11:23, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
Aww, not Canadian section? XD--§ Eloc § 13:58, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
I'm bumping this and offering my support for it. I've seen pages changed just because I always write "Armour." Drives people nuts, I guess. I don't mind the change and I think as a guideline this could do us well. It couldn't hurt, and consistency is something desperately needed in wikis. MiraLantis 22:57, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
What about the people that aren't American that use the wiki? What about the Americans that aren't good at spelling. This Guideline is hogwash. Oh and what about the Candians that use the wiki. coloUr FTW Effigy 03:11, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Agreed. I'd say just leave it as it is originally written in the article. — Eloc 16:03, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Im not opposed to someone going in and correcting obvious speeeeling errors. It's just that when u have a multitude of people from different versions of english writing the wiki, it is almost impossible to force one brand.Effigy 23:08, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
