Back to the Trojans

I did TexMod on my computer, and used the cartography and dark glass UI mods for two days, then my guildie said his McAfee came up with a trojan in TexMod (I have Norton, so it didn't come up.). I uninstalled my TexMod just to be safe, although I'm itching to reinstall it, but I don't want to get my computer infected with spyware, especially as this one is only a few weeks old and my last one eventually died from spyware. What does everyone else think? Is it a false positive, or are we all walking into a huge scam here and TexMod is a keylogger, computer ruiner, the works, etc. etc. annoying piece of a program? Just wanted to hear everyone's opinions on the topic. Calor 04:28, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

McAfee is notorious for it's false alarms. It just detects a program that can use other programs and thinks that it's harmful. -- Gem (gem / talk) 06:00, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
/meditate over this. I'll prolly reinstall it unless someone comes up shouting "omgwtfbbq my comp just exploded and ate my fridge because of TexMod". Calor 16:17, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
And TexMod doesn't try to contact the internet at all, evidence provided by my firewall. :) -- Gem (gem / talk) 20:01, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
Any program that latches onto another the way TexMod does is going to be flagged by McAfee as a trojan, regardless of it's true intention. If you're worried, just watch your firewall, and note that TexMod doesn't attempt to access the net at all, nor does it trigger any program you don't tell it to.--Pyron Sy 21:13, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

while attempting to run texmod targeted at "gw.exe -perf" with the Elona, Cantha, and Tyria packages, i received the error message as described. Since I have run texmod targeted at "gw.exe" with all 3 packages just fine before, I make an educated guess that it doesn't like being targeted at command-line switches.
Correct. You cannot run it with any command line switches. Which is a shame because I miss using -password.--Pyron Sy 22:08, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

.dds...again

im using the program paint.net, its latest version DOES support .dds but all i see when i open it is a transparent background with only a few pieces of armor. when i save the same thing as .bmp i can see everything, but thats no good because it all goes shiny. i used GIMP to open the .dds file but again, its the same thing (transparent background, small pieces of armor). are there additional layers im missing? it would be great if someone could show me what im supposed to be seeing--The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:Kh1ndjal .

paint.net is a different program that does support .dds files in its latest version as i said above. i CAN modify the sticky outy armor parts without a problem. i just cant modify the rest of the armor, because i cant see it Kh1ndjal 12:30, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Little bit of confusion here. I took a texture file that I saved in BMP. When I mod it (in PSP, not MSPaint) it turns out shiny. PSP has alpha channels, so why is it turning out shiney? And since that has turned out shiney, I'm thinking of trying the black on shiney method, but I don't fully understand the instuctions. What exactly am I supposed to do when editing for that method? Thanks for any help or answers - Zelyoniy Ranger

Ultra Transparency on Armors

As of late whenever I try to save an armor texture it comes up so transparent I can hardly see it like here: [1] I'm not turning on Translucent ether and when I try to edit I can't see it at all and when I load it back up the armor just appears black. Jigoku 21:42, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

i have a similar problem =/ any help would be appreciated Kh1ndjal 10:24, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
just save it and problem solved, it will be fine in file form, i believe
Even when I save it and open it in GIMP it's still just as transparent. Jigoku 20:30, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
Any armor that has transparent parts (most do) shows up like this. You only need to check if the correct texture is replaced by the green one and then extract it. Transparancy is handeled by the alpha channel. White is completely opaque, black invisible. The other thing that the alpha channel controls is the environment map (simulated reflectiveness). Here also white means completely shiny and black dull. Make shure you extract to a format that supports alpha channel, the best choice would be .DDS or maybe .PNG -- Morgoth Bauglyr 01:47, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
I always extract with .DDS Thanks for the feedback though! Jigoku 20:40, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
I have this problem too (using gimp), i set to extract to TGA as BMP seemed to not regonise transparency. Im wondering how you can edit it when its so transparent? Some parts (like my paragons gloves) are simply to hard to see, and if i do edit somthing the part i added has this "shinny" effect, is there somthing i can do about this?--81.103.41.86 03:13, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

At this time, there is no known way to modify a tpf file. The only way to add more textures is to have the original creator rebuild the mod with the additional textures.--Pyron Sy 15:11, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

I have the same problem as the first guy. When I click 'run' on texMod, it is as if I actually started Guild Wars. Trojan!

When i dowload the Textmod, my antivirus (Virus Scan enterprise of McAffe) detected a Trojan kwon as "New Malware.aj" I wrote the warning, but Drago deleted it. You have a img here: http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/6784/virusrw4.jpg

Did you even look at what that means? McAfee uses a type of detection called "Heuristic detection", which scans for code that "looks like it might do bad things". This includes modifying data of other programs in memory, such as textures. "New Malware.aj" isn't actually confirmed malware, it's McAfee's way of saying "I have no clue what this does but changing things like this might be bad". Since the entire purpose of the program IS to change such things, it's basically a false alert. Sort of like a metal detector going off when a policeman walks through it. Yes, the policeman has a gun on his hip, but that's not a huge cause for alarm.
I'm removing the notice as it's effectively scaremongering. (Edit: Gem already removed it.) Go to Aiiane's Talk page (Aiiane - talk - contribs) 22:04, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
I didn't know that Malware.aj was a heuristic alert and not a type of Trojan. I apologize.

I've also added a note about this in the FAQ section. -- Gem (gem / talk) 22:16, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

NEW: I permited the dowload, but, when i came to unzip it, the program inject a process on explorer.exe (This is not now GW. exe :p) and detected a trojan known as "Downloader-ARR!mem" http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_140164.htm

Try googling it: there's literally nothing about that at all on the web beyond McAfee's own page about it. Go to Aiiane's Talk page (Aiiane - talk - contribs) 22:48, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
This is why people stopped using McAffee years ago. Even Microsoft realised how bad it was getting and stopped using it for scanning hotmail attachments. -- Gem (gem / talk) 00:26, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
Given the way this triggers virus scans, I can see someone adding something malicious to a copy of TexMod, expecting the users to politely tell the virus scanners to buzz off. To alleviate this possibility, I would suggest the following:
  • By the download link for TexMod, provide a link to the official TexMod site.
  • Provide a MD5 checksum. Provide at least one other checksum (SHA?) -- see also.
  • Don't provide a link to the download for TexMod. Let users get it from the TexMod homepage. This reduces the chance of someone editing the link to the download to point to a trojan.
71.208.164.241 19:14, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
Agreed with the link to TexMod website instead of a direct link. -- Gem (gem / talk) 19:20, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Help with modding

Ok, I followed TuT, I got directX9 installed, i've tried 3 different mods and all of them never work. Can somebody please tell me what's going on? Own age myname 00:06, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

I've had dozens of people ask me this question, both here, on the forums, and in-game. In every instance, the problem is an older video card that doesn't fully support DX9. Even if it's installed on your system, if the card isn't compatible, Texmod won't work. I've added this to the FAQ for future reference.--Pyron Sy 00:30, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Technically, yes, but it'll still use the same model, so the armor will generally look messed up because the textures and models don't match. I recommend looking through the armor art galleries. -- Gordon Ecker 04:23, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Trojan on Norton

Yes, I do realise there is a notice at the top of the page saying "Don't post anything more about viruses or trojans", and I have read the FAQ (which didn't particularly help), but this is different than the other complaints I have seen posted here. I use Norton, not McAffee, and when I tried to open TexMod today, it detected a Trojan Horse known as Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c [Kaspersky]. I did some research and found this is not a "might be dangerous because it's modifying another file zomg", this thing sends info of what I do to its source. Norton destroyed TexMod and so I attempted to redownload it, but Norton blocked it again and set it's destructive minions on TexMod. Am I the only one getting this issue? Wow tired of seeing these trojan horse scares show up... Read here. Texmod is classified as a trojan horse in-so-far-as it changes the way another program runs. One type of trojan horse is tagged because of 'data destruction' Virus scanners think that because texmod changes the gw.dat file before it is used that it is a trojan horse because it destroys data in that file, which is true from the virus scanners view-point. Texmod does NOT destroy that information, it simply changes the textures in the file (the whole point of running this program). Further down in the list where it shows examples, one of these is a pure example of what texmod does, although texmod is non-destructional... corrupting files in a subtle way. Any changes to another file while a program (not specifically calling it) runs will be flagged in this manner. I hope this explains some things to some people.
Several people above stated that if you are really worried to check the MD5 sum, which they are 100% correct. MD5 is an algorithm created to ensure that a file has not been tampered/edited since it was created. Every file has a MD5 'error-correction' sum inside the file. Running one of those MD5 programs above will allow you to check what that sum is and compare it to what it should be. Texmod is NOT a virus. Texmod does NOT relate PW/user information back to anyone. Texmod is safe to use. Can we please archive all these old OMG Virus edits? — Rappy 16:42, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

Well i would agree if it was actually modifying the .dat file, but the program wasn't even executed, I downloaded it, used it and never bothered with it again.. (about two months ago) I have actually formatted my machine since i last used it and it hasnt been executed since then.

Im sat here using paint shop and from out of nowhere symantec found the virus. I'm guessing it had been lying dorment, my only guess as nothing else has been infected, just that exe. Cant make sense of it, but thats all im saying, and yes this is planet earth, expense has everything to do with it :) --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:Xiandrinker (talk).

Most scanners don't only run off executed software but proactivly scan new files and files that are clicked on. So you don't actually have to run a virus to have it detected and deleted. Texmod doesn't modify files directly, instead it intercepts them in the video ram and replaces them(afaik), this is very very much like how many virus' operate. --Lou-SaydusHow dare you put that damned dirty thing on me! 17:48, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

A brick wall.

I seem to be hitting a snag when trying to create textures to use for armor (and everything else.) I can extract a texture (extracted as .BMP) And find it nice and settled in the output folder But then the output folder does not contain any .log files, so I cant do anything but edit the .BMP files and then bash my head into my keyboard wondering why I am encountering this problem.

Would it be possible to modify someone else's mod without starting over from scratch? There are some UI mods here on the wiki that I like, but they could use a few minor fixes, or a simple color change, or simply making the left side border of the friends panel straight.
