Not to worry. These drop separately from your normal item drops, so you didn't lose a chance at a salable item in favor of your pie. You can get these along with another item from some kills.

Effect Ends Upon Death

Regarding the statement: "The effect does not go away when you die, but does when you travel to a new zone. (This is consistent with other consumables that do not provide morale boosts.)" It does in fact, end upon death. Unless the effect is actually still there even though the icon for the effect disappears. Anyone know if this statement needs to be altered?
