Merging guide[edit]
Due to the legal issues related to merging and attribution, I believe that we should create a merging guide, similar to Wikipedia's merging and moving guide, but less complicated, and make the merge template link to that guide. -- Gordon Ecker (talk) 04:58, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
- I think how you do it is rather obvious, and the only thing that is required for GFDL is this part:
- "with an edit summary noting "merge content from article name" (This step is required in order to conform with §4(I) of the GFDL. Do not omit it nor omit the page name.)"
- But we could also make some help page like Help:Redirect poke | talk 11:50, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
- Uhm, legal issues, how? I thought pretty much all non-ANet content on the wiki is in the public domain and thus can be used/moved/replicated/reused/whatever everywhere we want? well, inside this wiki, anyway. I'm obviously not really knowledgeable about copyright laws etcetera though. — Why 02:25, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
- Public domain??? How can you not understand the text that is shown whenever you edit something: "By clicking the save page button below, you agree to license your contribution pursuant to the GNU Free Documentation License [...]"?
- We are a GFDL wiki, and nothing here is public domain unless it is specified so. poke | talk 13:54, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

- If you feel there's a need, then sure. The thing is in getting people to actually read them.... :/ -- ab.er.rant 19:04, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
- re:poke I know someone was going to say that right after I saved, but I couldn't be bothered changing it. Anyway, I still don't get the legal issues of merging stuff, but hey, nevermind, you guys seem to get it and that's enough for me to sleep well. :P — Why 22:53, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
- When you merge things by using copy&paste (which is the only way you can actually merge two different pages) one of the page's history page will be "ignored". So when you merge Page B into Page A, the original history of A stays intact, but when you copy the content from B, you will only have one revision entry in Page A's history which shows that _you_ merged it. So all entries of the history of Page B are gone. And that is the whole issue. poke | talk 23:14, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
- You earn points for clarity. ++. — Why 23:24, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
- Would it be possible to merge histories by first deleting Page A, moving Page B to Page A and then undeleting the original Page A revisions or would that screw something up Poke ... or would you rather be called Pole from now on :P. It's something I've always wondered both with pages and images but never got around to actually asking. --Kakarot 02:46, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
