Hey there!

So, you're new to Guild Wars Wiki. There's nothing wrong with that! But...

Before you start talking and editing, please read these very basic guidelines.

Sign your posts[edit]

Whenever you're on a talk page, you should add ~~~~ to the end of your message before posting.

Why?[edit]

A typical talk page.

Notice that after each message is a name, often in coloured text, and then a date.
This is a signature. It tells who added it and when. When you write ~~~~, the Wiki automatically turns it into a signature when you submit the message.
The basic signature is just your name with a link to your Userpage. You can edit it in your preferences. Also see GWW:SIGN.

Give edit summaries[edit]

When you make any real change, summarize a) what you did and b) why, in the edit summary box.

What?[edit]

A typical edit summary.

It really helps people looking through their watchlist or the recent changes to see what the edits were, and it also saves them asking why.
For very small edits, such as fixing a typo, just mark it Minor (see the image again) and don't worry about summarizing.

Be bold + discuss[edit]

There's a time to be bold and fix mistakes, and there's a time to discuss. Use the talk page before making major edits.

When?[edit]

Discussion and edit.

A huge project like this Wiki is far from perfect, so whenever you see a mistake in a content page, go ahead (in fact, please) fix it.
But for bigger changes, like replacing pictures, moving page names, or editing whole paragraphs or more, ask about it.

Trolling and vandalism[edit]

It may sound obvious, but please, don't waste people's time.

olol, whatever you does mean?[edit]

Trolling.
Vandalism.

Anything that makes someone say "I feel stupider for having to post simple logic like this" is trolling.
Anything that utterly destroys a page is vandalism. HINT: undoing vandalism of any kind is extremely easy. Don't bother.
And yet, it still happens...

Extra tips[edit]

Here are a few extra tips to make your editing experience easier.

  1. Read over Guild Wars Wiki:How to help, which contains more in-depth and specific places for info and jobs around the Wiki.
  2. You can design your own userpage. There are more experienced people than me who can give you templates (1, 2, 3) if you want to really get into it.
  3. The Wiki's version of English is American. This means armor, not armour; targeted, not targetted; practice, not practise.
  4. You're not allowed to delete any discussion from a talk page, but see Help:Archiving to move it.
  5. Need more opinions or feel like your idea is getting squashed? Ask for comments here.
  6. Yes, it gets easier as you go! :)

That's all, folks[edit]

Thanks for taking the trouble to read this. If you know anyone else who also needs help, pass it on.
Good luck and happy editing!
