Background[edit]

Mu Ren was born in the slums of Kaineng City to parents who ran a small restaurant. His childhood was a rough one since the streets of Kaineng often serve as battlegrounds to warring gangs, vying for control over the metropolis. While working in his father's kitchen, Mu Ren became quite proficient with using knives and was able to even perform several tricks. Mu Ren would use these tricks to earn a side income as a street entertainer and for more practical uses when he ever encountered trouble while roaming Kaineng City's numerous streets and alleyways.

Like many of Cantha's denizens, Mu Ren was a great admirer of Emperor Kisu and believed the Celestial Ministry was a hopeless bunch of pencil pushers, not aligned with the common people's needs. As a teenager, he hoped that one day he would serve under the Emperor's Hands as one of the Emperor's agents. As Mu Ren became older, he lost sight of his dream and realised that with his exceptional dagger skills, he could make a difference to the people of his neighbourhood, here and now. He soon became a vigilante, bringing law and order to his neighbourhood when the Emperor's Guard couldn't.

By the time Mu Ren was 23, he had attracted a lot of attention to himself and he was eventually visited by none other than Master Togo himself. Master Togo acknowledge Mu Ren's exceptional skills and offered him training at the esteemed Shing Jea Monastery if he so wished. Knowing that the offer was too good to refuse, Mu Ren gladly accepted the invitation and began training. A year later, Mu Ren completed his training not a moment too soon as news arrived of a strange plague causing Cantha's denizens to transform into hideous monsters. Mu Ren, worried about his family, set off back to the mainland, hoping he was not too late to save them from the Afflicted and the plague that they were carrying.
