Corrupted spores and corrupted scales reportedly (not my firsthand testing, ask Gordon Ecker) don't count as spirits for Spirit Walk, so you may be looking at an anomaly there under this interpretation. If it weren't for those tests, I probably would have tried classifying them as spirits myself. --Rezyk 20:03, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Equating susceptibility to deathbane with that of holy damage has some known anomalies:

  • Carven Effigies and Undead Prince Rurik (deathbane, but not holy)
  • Phantom (creature, not species) (holy, but not deathbane)

I thought I could come up with more examples, but much of the reports turn out to be indefinite. =/ Not enough deathbane testing, really. Some more suspects for anomalies are: Undead Lich and Rotscale (not holy, deathbane unknown), and the other phantomy/wraithy stuffs. --Rezyk 20:23, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Undead Lich -- Deathbane = y
Rotscale -- Deathbane = y
Portal Wraith -- Deathbane = y
Wraith -- Deathbane = y
Smoke Phantom -- Deathbane = y
Phantom -- Deathbane = n
Scythe of Chaos -- Demonslaying = y
Grasp of Insanity -- Demonslaying = y
I'll do some more as soon as I get a chance. --Dirigible 23:26, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
Nice. Hmm, so that at least adds Undead Lich, Rotscale, and Smoke Phantom as anomalies. --Rezyk 02:25, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
Well, this is a fine mess... So, Undead but does not take double damage from holy damage? How do we explain that? One definition says Undead take double damage from Holy Damage, another says, they take extra damage from weapons of Deathbane. How can a creature satisfy one condition but not the other?
This is HUGE, because it says that Deathbane works on all creatures affiliated, not a species, which would not bode well for all species-slaying mods. I'll go back to Emily. --Karlos 05:38, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
Deathbane works the same as all of the other bonus-damage mods on weapons. Holy damage, however, does not work based on the species; we have to determine if a creature is susceptible to holy damage on an individual basis. If a creature is undead, but does not take additional holy damage, we likely did not add that weakness, either due to the power of the creature being such that it could overcome that weakness, or it could be oversight, in which case it's probably a bug. In the case of the ones above, I believe they were all intended.
Wraiths and Smoke Phantoms are ethereal creatures, not necessarily undead ones. The Lich, Rurik, and Rotscale all are powerful creatures who would be unaffected by the weakness to holy damage. Carven Effigies have a fairly unique position, as they are not actually undead, but are strongly associated with the undead. Ideally, they wouldn't be affected by Deathbane either, but in order to change that, it would be far more work than the change is worth. I'd prefer to think of it as an "unintended feature" instead of a bug. Andrew McLeod (Freyas) - ArenaNet creature designer 21:13, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply Andrew. I'll remove the {{bug}}-tag from the Smoke Phantom page right away and make it into a note. This also means that Ethereal creature is a type/species itself, right? -- CoRrRan (CoRrRan / talk) 21:27, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
Looking more into these creatures, it seems like there's some inconsistency in how they are set up. Wraiths and Smoke Phantoms should be related, but they are set up differently, and wraiths are weak to holy damage, while smoke phantoms are not. I'd like to make this consistent, but I'll need to run it by the "higher powers". An Ethereal creature category would probably ideally include things like Fog Nightmares and Azure Shadows as well, but they belong to a completely different family. Unless we get the ethereal undead guys separated, it's probably best to classify them as undead. In general, many of the creatures in Prophecies aren't very consistent in a lot of behaviors, as there weren't any solid conventions established yet, so there are probably a lot of instances of things like this.
