Species[edit]

Definition: Species denotes the creature's type. This affects what traits the creature has such as it's vulnerability to certain weapons and skills as well as it's resistance to certain types of damage.

Hierarchy: The assumption is that there are arch-species and sub-species. The clear dividing line seems to be Fleshy vs non-Fleshy as there seems to be no creatures that blur this line (i.e. get poisoned, but do not leave corpses). Within that, there are arch sub-types (such as Undead) that cause certain traits (such as taking double damage from holy damage) but still have sub-species such as Skeletons that are non-fleshy and take extra damage from "Skeleton slaying" mods as well as fleshy creatures.

Criteria: See below.

Political affiliation[edit]

Definition: Affiliation defines creatures' allegiance to a specific diety/group and it's hostility to other groups.

Effect: The effect of affiliattion can be seen in a few ways:

  1. Groups of monsters being hostile to each other, such as Outcasts being hostile to all other creatures in the Jade Sea or the Afflicted being hostile to the creatures of the Echovald Forest and the Jade Sea.
  2. Certain bounties reward slaying creatures allied with a specific cause (Anguish creatures, Servants of Dhuum) than actual species.

Criteria[edit]

Slaying mods[edit]

These will always determine species. Sometimes they determine sub-species, as in the case of Skeleton-slaying

of Charrslaying species: charr
of Deathbane undead
of Demonslaying demon
of Dragonslaying species: dragon
of Dwarfslaying species: dwarf
of Giantslaying species: giant
of Ogreslaying species: ettin or
species: yeti
of Pruning species: plant
of Skeletonslaying species: skeleton
of Tenguslaying species: tengu
of Trollslaying species: troll

Bounties[edit]

These sometimes indicate political allegiance, but most of the times, it's species. In very rare cases (see Undead Hunt) it indicates BOTH:

Anguish Hunt affiliation: Servant of Mallyx
species: inconclusive
Corsair Bounty affiliation: corsair
species: human
Demon Hunt affiliation: servant of Abaddon
species: demon
Dhuum Battle affiliation: servants of Abaddon/Dhuum
species: Demonic Dryders (so Terrorwebs and Torturewebs only)/some chaos demons (Grasps, Mesmer Scythes)
Elemental Hunt affiliation: none (or Vabbian, as in Hidde City)
species: elemental
Giant Hunt affiliation: none
species: giant
Heket Hunt affiliation: none
species: heket
Insect Hunt affiliation: none
species: Insect (Elonian)
Kournan Bounty affiliation: Kournan army
species:Human
Mandragor Hunt affiliation: none
species: mandragor
Margonite Battle affiliation: Servant of Abaddon
species: margonite
Menzies Battle affiliation: Menzies
species: Shadow Army/Nightmare?
Minotaur Hunt affiliation: none
species: minotaur
Monolith Hunt affiliation: Servant of Abaddon
species: monolith
Monster Hunt affiliation: none
species: howler or
species: ntouka or
species: ntouka bird or
species: behemoth (elonian) or
species: cobalt
Monster Hunt #2 affiliation: Servant of Abaddon
species: torment creature
Plant Hunt affiliation: none
arch-species:plant
Skale Hunt affiliation:none
species: skale
Skree Battle affiliation: Harpy
species: harpy
Titan Hunt affiliation: Servant of Abaddon/Lich?
species: titan
Undead Hunt affiliation: Servant (or former servant) of Palwa
OR arch-species:undead

Other criteria[edit]

Death can damage each other under Edge of Extinction same species
Can pass disease to each other same species
Specifically immune to bleeding, disease, and poison not fleshy
Corpses left behind are not exploitable not fleshy
Takes double damage from holy damage arch-species: Undead
Counts as "margonite" for Forgotten Retribution counter species: margonite
Counts as "demonic servant of Abbadon" for Lightbringer Signet and Lightbringer's Gaze activation
Counts as part of "Abaddon and his demonic servants" for Lightbringer title
affiliation: servant of Abaddon
Counts as a "spirit" for skills and soul reaping species: spirit
Cannot be hexed or enchanted, with the message "Spirits are not affected by this type of skill". Immune to conditions. species: spirit
Drops the same Trophy same species OR same affiliation
Shared graphical model Inconclusive... can indicate same species
In-game lore Can indicate species or affiliation

Anomalies[edit]

  • Do Shadow Beasts trigger EoE on other Shadow Army units or vice versa? (This would "greatly" weaken EoE's credibility as a clear cut decider of species as Shadow Beasts are decidedly not even Fleshy while all other Shadow Army units are)
  • Are Corrupted Scales and Explosive Growths affected by Gaze of Fury? They are unhexable and cannot suffer conditions with a message saying they are spirits. Is it just a glitch (i.e. misderivation of the base class of the creature)?
  • Explosive Growths are labeled as spirits by the game, they trigger EoE on Urgoz... Is HE a spirit? Can he be killed with Gaze of Fury? If not, EoE's credibility as a clear cut decider agains is questionable. It basically shows the Devs can give arch-types that clash with the creature's EoE species.
  • Do all ghosts in the game take double-damage from holy damage? Need to test on the UW ghosts (Tortured Spirits). The evil Ghostly Hero in Dunes of Despair is fleshy and leaves a corpse. :(
  • Are Wraiths -humanoid spectres, with tendancy to be affiliated with guys like the Lich and Dhuum- (like Wraiths and Smoke Phantoms and Mindblade Spectres) and Phantoms -squids- (like Phantoms and posibly Mragga Spawn) the same species? Do they share a common arch-species with Nighmares?
  • Do Smite Crawlers take double damage from holy damage? (I never solo farmed them back in the day)

Level 2 Information: Species Traits[edit]

Once we are set on which creatures belong to which species, we need to build up a list of Species traits. This is a list of some traits I observed over the years:

Trait Species
Double damage from holy damage Undead
+AL vs Elemental Damage Stone Guardians, Terrorweb Dryders?, Spirit of Portals
Increased AL and Resistence to Conditions and Hexes? Diamond Djinn?
Moves at increased speed in Normal Mode (25%? 33%?) Phantoms, Behemoths (Elonian), Drakes (Tyrian) <-- 33%
Attacks knockdown foes (always? 50%?) Abyssals, Zhu Hanuku, ...
Cannot be knocked down Ice Golems, Earth Elemntals, Giants (Tyrian), Stone Guardians (except reapers), ...
+AL vs Fire damage Titans, Charr
-AL vs Fire damage Ice Golems
