Like many people, I was confused and upset at Anet's announcement tat they intend to remove "Point and Click" from the game all together. This would be understandable if swimming and the z-axis were not going to be added into GW2, but as they are, the four directional controls of a keyboard are not ideal for maneuvering in three dimensions, and therefore, I had to suspect some other form of control was possible. Then I considered, what if directional buttons were used to direct movement underwater and another button (perhaps the "jump" button) were used to swim? To use a simile, the arrow and WASD controls would be like a steering wheel and the swim button would be like the throttle. Then I applied this to mouse controls and considered, what if the right mouse button were used to manipulate the camera and holding the left mouse button would cause your character to move in the direction your camera is pointing? (note holding down the button would be necessary to produce movement, simply clicking would not suffice so as to prevent bad targeting from causing unintentional movement) This would provide fluid control over three dimensional movement and also suit the play styles of big mouse control users like myself. Since I'm generally not pointing and clicking anyway, I hold down both right and left mouse buttons to move, this wouldn't really change my play style at all. To further streamline things, perhaps jumping could be activated, not only by a keyboard button, but also by a double-click with the mouse. To make this work, momentum from running would have to keep one moving forward to direct the jump, so characters in this system would not stop on a dime, but they shouldn't really slide much either. A momentum system would have to be tested and calibrated for gameplay. On a side note, if an action battle system is incorporated, I'd still very much recommend strong compatibility with 3rd-party game controllers, though I see no reason why mouse controls should not be used for movement as well.
