I just play an Mp3 in the background. GO FIGURE?!-- User Vanguard VanguardLogo.pnganguard 00:43, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

Don't gotta alt-tab if you play in windowed mode--Amantis 19:17, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
I never play games in windowed mode, and I thought this would be a nice feature they could add. I've played games that have this, they only support audio files but if GW2 would support video files like .avi, .divx, etc... it would be nice, and if there will be titles like the drunkard title again well there would be an easier way of watching a movie or something while drinking. This would just be convenient. talk Qaletaqa Hania 22:18, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

umm problem with that is... i think ArenaNet wants us to actually PLAY the game not just leave in on auto and do something else.--Isaac the Sinful 22:42, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

Well, I don't know about you but I can listen to music or watch something and still actually play the game, and an MP3 player would already be enough. It's easier then alt-tabbing, and I already would've liked at multiple occasions to be able to watch a movie or the news while playing a game but I don't like playing in windowed mode so mostly I shutdown the game and watch the news or a movie first and after that I go back to playing the game.
So my point is that some people can still actually PLAY the game while listening to music or watching something. Multitasking is what it's called when people do two or more things at the same time. talk Qaletaqa Hania 03:07, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
If you are using Windows, use foobar2k. If you are using Linux, you basically don't get a good media player, but go with XMMS. It tries to be winamp. An mp3 player in GW2 would either be terrible because it's a minimalist feature and has no equalizer, no sound enhancer, no playlist, or anything else; or else it would be pointless bloatware because it does have all of those features, but somehow manages to raise your CPU consumption by like 50mB. —Jette User Jette awesome.png 06:56, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
Don't you mean RAM consumption? and why wouldn't it be able to have a playlist, equalizer, etc...? because it is in-game? frigin naysayers, it can be bad that's correct but it can also turn out to be a good replacement for your favourite mp3/media player while playing the game, and another thing Jette, with foobar2k I still have to alt-tab. talk Qaletaqa Hania 22:39, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
MP3 players go against the flavor of games. ArenaNet doesn't want "Let the Bodies Hit the Floor" to be the theme of Orr. ~Shard User Shard Sig Icon.png 22:47, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
"I still have to alt-tab"
Oh, GAWD! Whatever will you do!? You poor thing! You poor, poor, pitiful thing! I feel so terrible for you, you have to perform a command that takes less time than casting RoF! I used to alt-tab in the middle of srs bsns gvg to check my email and nobody even cared. And yes, I meant RAM, sorry about that.
{{quote2|"Let the Bodies Hit the Floor" to be the theme of Orr
That would be pretty awesome, actually. —Jette User Jette awesome.png 22:59, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
@Shard: Lol, so the option to turn off the music in-game is also against the "flavor of the games"? Also playing an MP3 of your choice while playing should be up to Arenanet and not the player? In my oppinion people should get the ability or chance to change the "flavor of the game" to something they think would be better suited for them, wich would in turn be better for Arenanet because players would not be forced to listen to in-game music and would therefore have a better playing experience. These little things matter to some players, and it's an option so you don't have to use it. talk Qaletaqa Hania 23:02, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
It's an option that takes an assload of time to program properly. The process of decoding compressed audio files (or even uncompressed audio files), processing them, then putting them out through speakers/headphones/whatever and actually making it sound good is not as simple as it sounds. It is a full-time project, as the people at winamp or foobar will tell you. Again: either it will be a crappy mp3 player that nobody likes, or it will take a huge amount of time/money to make that could be spent on, y'know, making the game not suck. —Jette User Jette awesome.png 23:06, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
There's a difference between turning off the music (makes the game more realistic) and enabling players to listen to a genre that adds nothing (or even detracts) from the gameplay. ~Shard User Shard Sig Icon.png 23:15, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
@Jette: Yes it might take quite some money and time to make a good one, but I would already be happy with a standard mp3 player without a sound enhancer or equalizer. A play, stop, pause, next and previous button with a playlist would suffice. Btw never ever call me a poor, poor, pitifull thing. I see that as a personal attack, and you don't know me. And if you are gonna continue this way i'll just ignore posts you made. Anyway if all you can say is nay then just say nay.
Btw a standard mp3 player isn't that hard to make, i've made one in the past with just the buttons and playlist and I liked it enough to use it for 6 months. It didn't have the sound enhancer or equalizer but it worked.
Anyway this is a game so anything extra other then a standard mp3 player would be awesome to be honest. talk Qaletaqa Hania 23:23, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

(Reset indent) @Shard: That's all a matter of personal taste. For some playing "Let the Bodies Hit the Floor" while playing will add to the gameplay, while for others like you it would detract. Just like turning off the music is better for others.

And personal taste is why this would be a good thing, it would let people use their favourite type of music. And if Anet supports that by putting in a mp3 player then those people would appreciate it, even if it is a shitty player. It means they care. talk Qaletaqa Hania 23:30, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

No, less stuff used ingame that can be run outside *without hurting framerate*=Faster game :)--Malchior Devenholm 01:19, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

No thats definately sth thats not needed. You can just run WMP (or whatever player you prefer) in background, add the music you wanna hear to its Playlist and go for it. You even can play in Fullscreen if you really want to (which I only do when srs bsns is going on in GW, otherwise there is just soo many stuff I do beside GW that its just annoying to have it running Fullscreen). As for Controls (Next, Prev, Play/Pause) there are Keyboard Keys that does exactly that and every Keyboard has them nowadays so thats no excuse. --SilentStorm Talk to me 01:55, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
@Silentstorm: I don't buy keyboards with "extra buttons". Telling from experience, they tend to suck, they either need drivers or other software to function properly. So I always go for a standard keyboard, or one that is ready once you plug it in. I now use a Ultra Flat Logitech Keyboard, wich I bought because it's smaller then regular keyboards.
@Malchior Devenholm: It wouldn't hurt framerate alot lol. Maybe 5-15 FPS, If a music player of your choice is using alot of resources you will see your FPS drop to. talk Qaletaqa Hania 05:08, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
"implying enough to cause 5-15 fps is a tiny amount of memory"
AHAHAHAHAHA
Seriously, download foobar and stop crying. —Jette User Jette awesome.png 05:40, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
Euhm Jette I have foobar. Also FPS is not a amount of memory, FPS means Frames Per Second wich is how much times your screen gets updated every second, btw stop making personal attacks, do you really think i'm crying about it? I even say 5-15 FPS isn't a big deal and I don't care what they do with my suggestion. If they implement it, good for me, if they don't then nothing is gonna change... so not a big deal. talk Qaletaqa Hania 10:14, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
NO. This is just a bad idea. As Shard and Jette have already said, the amount of programming it would require wouldn't be worth the effort, regardless of how good or poor they made the sound quality. NO ONE ELSE WANTS THIS. So use whatever player you have, or just turn off the speakers and use an Ipod or turn on a frickin radio.--Will Greyhawk 23:51, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
Only realistic way to do this sort of thing without wasting far more resources than it's worth to implement ... would be to allow other media players to be embedded into the GW2 UI via plugins. That's probably still a pain and likely not to work very well. --Sirius (talk) 17:26, 2 October 2009 (UTC)
Sry that I didn't respond earlier, been sick. Anyway I like your input Sirius, atleast someone that is giving constructive criticism instead of tearing down the idea, thank you. talk Qaletaqa Hania 14:46, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
Continuing from what Sirius said, Another online game has a media player that works in that way and it works well. The in-game player in that game can integrate with iTunes and Winamp, and If somthing similar were to be implemented in GW2 then compatability with Windows Media Player and VLC would be great. Jarak 03:49, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

Finally, someone whos made a great idea[edit]

I think this is a great idea, because when i play songs (using Zune Marketplace and all its RAMmy goodness) my game tends to, spazz out, a lot. Graphics always seem to get freaky when i turn my music up, or when it gets to an intense part of the song. It's ONLY when i listen to music though, im not crazy. This would stop that problem for me, because i KNOW GW2 is gonna use even more space and probably freak out even more. Sonic Sunday User Da Sonic Sig2.png 05:05, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

Considering that even Windows Fail Media Player does not cause such problems, I believe you are exaggerating. Vili 点 User talk:Vili 05:10, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
Yeah I'd say its' exaggerating too but if it's like Firefox with memory maybe that's not so far of a stretch. Anyways it is annoying to switch over, but not THAT annoying. A more realistic fix would to not minimize Guild Wars when your media player comes up. Previously Unsigned 11:58, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
