Can we get some proof that Steve Costa released this image under the GFDL or into public domain? -- Gordon Ecker 05:52, 13 March 2007 (EDT)

I don't know who Steve Costa is, but I do know that the image is one from ANet, and so isn't anybody's except their's to release into GFDL. The delete tag should be removed and replaced with {{arenanet image}} Fox 05:57, 13 March 2007 (EDT)
It says on the bottom of the image "Fanwork by Steve Costa based on guild wars" -- Scourge File:Scourge.gif 06:00, 13 March 2007 (EDT)
Yes it does, but that's not all it says. It says the images are copyright ANet, and that's because what he has done is put two ANet copyrighted images on top of each other. Check the official images uploaded by Emily at eg TyriaMap.jpg Fox 06:03, 13 March 2007 (EDT)
No, I think this is a more complex issue. The images used are copyright ANet, but the work carried out is copyright Steve Costa. While it might be ok for us to use the same source images as Steve Costa did, to use the map in its entirety we would need the permission of Steve Costa.
That is my understanding. LordBiro 06:07, 13 March 2007 (EDT)
It's a tricky situation, wouldnt Steve Costa be breaking some type of copyright by using the official images off Anet anyway?

(Reset indent)
Okay, firstly Costa can't copyright or claim copyright on the work, because he never held any copyright over the original 2 pics he spliced together - they are ANet images which have never been made GFDL or PD. His work of putting two together cannot be claimed as intellectual property either, becuae he has made no contribution or modification etc. Costa himself does not even claim rights over the image - he rightly refers to it as "fanwork". Perhaps to make life simpler, one of us should just go and take Emily's uploaded images, stack em, and replace Costa's Fox 06:13, 13 March 2007 (EDT) Edit to add - sorry, it wasn't Emily it was Reagan Fox

He can't hold copyright on the four source images, but I think he may be able to claim copyright on the parts that he filled in, such as the northeastern mountaine. I've uploaded a temporary image. Steve Costa's image is probably okay, but I think, at the very least, we should include a disclaimer similar to Wikipedia's fair use template stating that using the image is believed to be okay. -- Gordon Ecker 06:23, 13 March 2007 (EDT)
I requested User talk:Reaganwright for a composite map of the world of Tyria. Perhaps Anet can help to resolve this issue here. BigBlue 06:47, 13 March 2007 (EDT)
I'm against using images that have a user's name on them anyway, I wouldn't want to set a precedent - next thing you know, you have images showing up all over the wiki with little vanity tags on them - so I would prefer if we just created our own image, or (hopefully) could get one from ArenaNet. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 11:12, 13 March 2007 (EDT)

Hi guys, it's Steve Costa here. As has been said above, I don't claim copyright over any of the image, even the portions that i've modified. I really just want to support the community, and I'm happy that my map is being used here. If you guys like I'll build a version without any copyright notices or anything and upload it for use here. The reason I put those notices on in the first place was to ensure that everyone knew that a) I didn't make the original maps, b) that the stacking and positions of the continents was not official but just an interpretation. So let me know what you guys think :) Auslander 00:20, 24 March 2007 (EDT)

Well, that'd definitely solve this conundrum. :P A version of the map without the name there would be great, for the reason Barek mentions above. (Great job with the map, by the way, looks neat!) Dirigible 00:31, 24 March 2007 (EDT)
I think removing the notice would be good as per Guild Wars Wiki:Image use (Although it hasn't been accepted yet so you can wait). We could put a notice like "fanart" or something on the image page and as captions where it's used so people don't think it's official. And thanks for letting us use the image; It looks wonderful. -Smurf User Smurf.png 00:35, 24 March 2007 (EDT)
Thanks for the comments, I've uploaded the image without copyright or logo. Hopefully there'll be a more official world map in a few months with Eye of the North. Auslander 01:59, 24 March 2007 (EDT)

Maybe we could get an update on this nice looking map with the new expansion to Tyria? Penguincontact

Deletion[edit]

What's it redundant with? Has it been superseded by a better world map? -- Gordon Ecker 09:44, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

Yes. --Santax (talk · contribs) 17:41, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
The other one is greyscale, this is color... why delete? It is even still used on Maps (Core). -- CoRrRan (CoRrRan / talk) 11:02, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
This one doesn't have the gwen expansion (far shiverpeaks). Chriskang 11:08, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

So.... delete? Replace the one on Maps (Core) first? -- ab.er.rant sig 12:26, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

I'd say no, until someone uploads something similar with the EotN expansion. -- CoRrRan (CoRrRan / talk) 15:42, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
