Site notice for stages 1 and 2[edit]

If there are no objections, there will likely be a return of the site notice for stages 1 and 2 (at least) of the upcoming election. --Rezyk 19:23, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

Fine by me :) LordBiro 19:28, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

Reminder for when updating the sitenotice[edit]

When the sitenotice is updated, and we want all users (even those who have previously clicked on "Dismiss") to see it, also update MediaWiki:Sitenotice id by increasing that number by one (1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, etc). That'll reset the cookie for all users. Of course, it's probably a good idea to be certain that this notice is really important, as it can get annoying quickly having to dismiss that notice when you least expect it, from a user's point of view.

Some more detail, just for reference: Technically, you only need to change the sitenotice id for the cookie to be reset. So if you change sitenotice id from 2 back to 1, it'll reset the cookie again, but only for those users who have visited the wiki since the ID got changed to 2; so someone who took a wikibreak during the time the sitenotice id was set to 2, won't see the notice once it's set back to 1 again. For this reason it's better to not backtrack with the numbers, but to progressively change them only in one direction. --Dirigible 00:47, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Downtime[edit]

Do we really need to have this site notice up now? The date concerned is almost a week away, and it'll last for a mere two hours. Put it up a day or two ahead, maybe, but not almost a week away. --Dirigible 10:09, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

I fully agree Dominator Matrix 10:35, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
It should be posted somewhere visible, but maybe the sitenotice isn't needed until two three days before. - anja talk 15:10, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
As you can always dismiss it, I don't think it is a big issue... poke | talk 16:00, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
I agree. And anyway, are we going to take it down just to put it back up in a couple of days? --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ Talk 16:08, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
Not for this one but for future uses :). Dominator Matrix 09:55, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
It's good to have this early since many users don't actually visit the site daily. *shock* Just dismiss it and it wont bother you for the whole week. -- Gem (gem / talk) 10:21, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
You can just increase the sitenotice id the day before to remind everyone who dismissed it a week ago. --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 11:20, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
If we did that, and taking into account the next Sitenotice id increase coming up in less than 24 hours (for the elections), it means that users will have to dismiss three notices warning about those two hours of downtime, all in less than a week. Then there will be yet another Sitenotice bump just a few days later, for the second stage of the election... There goes all hope we had of keeping the Sitenotice from becoming annoying.
Can we at least agree here to skip that id bump that Lemming is suggesting now? And that maybe the next time an admin feels the need to pop up the Sitenotice for new issues, they post on this talk page first, letting the community know about their intention BEFORE they act, just like we do when we mess around with the Sidebar or other pages in the MediaWiki namespace? --Dirigible 02:52, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
I think it's worth reminding people here that most users have no account and thus can not dismiss the sitenotice. Backsword 03:01, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
Plus you have to remember the default one is ugly :P --Kakarot Talk 03:03, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
The dismiss function is not user-based, Backsword. It's cookie based, so you can also dismiss it when not logged in. poke | talk 12:17, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
w00t - forget what I said.. Why is the sitenotice not dismissable when you are not logged in!? It is cookie based o.O poke | talk 12:20, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) I just logged out to check since I don't remember having a dismiss link when logged out, and there was none Poke. --Kakarot Talk 12:22, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Design[edit]

Could we do something about the.. less than awesome design of this notice? I would be fine with just text, honestly, but other suggestions are welcome :) - anja talk 00:00, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Designed one that still would stand out a little, but is not so ugly. User:Brains12/Sandbox/Sitenotice. Feel free to add more designs under that one. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ Talk 00:07, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
Not the most beautiful thing, but better. Anyone have better designs? Calor Talk 00:09, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
I'll put the message up now so people can know about the election, but I'd still like a restyle asap. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ Talk 01:30, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
Hmm, I took the centre-alignment out because of the large gap with two messages, but the notice itself becomes centrally aligned despite the page itself being left-aligned. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ Talk 01:39, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
Yay, finally the default one got changed :) Still doesn't look as good as mine but definitely an improvement. --Kakarot Talk 11:54, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Stage 4[edit]

We are now in stage four, thsi needs to be changed :o) --Shadowphoenix Please, talk to me; I'm so lonley ;-; 00:09, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Since Stage 4 doesn't really involve discussion is the last sentence necessary, rather ask before I remove it :) --Kakarot Talk 01:04, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
I was thinking the same, but since this election requires ArenaNet's intervention (unless a candidate pulls out), some decision-making-via-discussion-or-other-means-of-whatever will still go on. Usually, it's just a matter of changing the userrights, but not in this case. --Pling! \ Brains12 \ Talk 01:06, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
I just saw that you meant the last sentence... meh. /apathy (although the election policy link should be kept somehow) --Pling! \ Brains12 \ Talk 01:07, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Maybe something like "We are currently in the final judgment phase for the April 2008 bureaucrat election, as per the elections policy deciding the second seat has been passed to ArenaNet!" If that is fine I will change it :) --Kakarot Talk 01:19, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
