Endgame Skills (Discussion)

In addition to the endgame green system, or even in place of it, there should be an endgame skill system. Each character gains an Endgame Skillpoint each time they complete one of the "campaigns" (that is, each time they get to the end of killing a dragon in the story). This skillpoint can then be spent to learn a PvE only skill. These skills transcend class and racial affiliation and are not linked to any title or attribute. They are quite powerful, but not necessarily way over-the-top, and can only be used in PvE. Like elite skills, only one Endgame Skill can be equipped at a time (but no endgame skill is considered an elite). A character can only gain an Endgame Skillpoint the first time they defeat a dragon (hell why not call them Dragon Skillpoints). So if there are 10 endgame skills and 4 dragons, there will be 6 endgame skills that your character can't learn. There should be no way to trade or sell these skillpoints.

I think that since the skills would only be available for use in PvE, having a few of them that your character could never learn wouldn't be a bad thing. Adding some element of permanent decision-making will make a character seem more unique and have a more distinguished identity. However the 'nerf factor' will undoubtedly open up a lot of controversy if there's no way to learn the remaining 6 skills. So if players really really really want to have access to all 10 Endgame skills (or however many you decide to put in...could be zero for all I know), there should at least be some way to make them very difficult to obtain. For instance, you can only learn the remaining 6 if you already have the first 4 (that is, you've already defeated all the dragons). But even then, they should require more gold to learn and more skillpoints. Like to learn a Dragon skill you need to either spend 1 Dragon skillpoint and 0gold, or 10platinum and 10skillpoints. That or make them only learnable through a series of quests, which would all be pretty difficult. I dunno. *shrug*

Anyway. The specifics are up to you. But I think the idea of Endgame Skills would be cool. The game would have to be very fun to replay though, otherwise these skills will seem kinda pointless. Then again, getting a maxed out weapon after you've already finished a game seems kinda pointless, too, when you first hear about it. But we've all seen that after finishing a campaign and getting that max item, there's plenty of good use for it doing other stuff. Like dungeons and elite missions and whatnot.

Why this is a good idea
  • Would provide additional incentive for players to finish the campaign(s).
  • Yet another way to make the PvE experience more grind.
Why it may not work out
  • If the remaining skills are unlearnable, and the ones you learned get nerfed, you're going to be seriously pissed off.
  • Would complicate the skillbar regulation (Only one elite, only one Endgame Skill, only 3 PvE skills, etc etc).
  • Reduces build variety.
  • Players without them will not get parties.
