Sending mail and items to other users (Discussion)

Sometimes it's easier to drop a letter in the box than it is to go to wherever the recipient is and hand it to them yourself. Guild Wars 2 should implement and in-game mail system. Players can send text messages, items, and money to other characters, even if the recipients are not currently online. A small fee could be charged for the delivery. Sending valuable items will cost even more money to send. The recipients can then open their mailbox (or perhaps via an in-game NPC) to read the message or to take the sent items or money.

And building on this idea, allowing guild leaders and guild officers to send a message to all members of a guild is more helpful than relying on the guild announcement window. Similarly, it might be nice to be able to send messages to all mutual friends on the friends list. Of course, conversely, to build in some mechanism against spam, a player can choose to reject messages sent by certain groups, such as rejecting messages from players not on your friends list.

Why this is a good idea
  • Be able to leave another player a message.
  • Useful for sending help (in the form of items or money) to a friend without needing to be online at the same time.
  • Useful for trading with another player and not having to be in the same in-game location.
Why it may not work out
  • Potential to get abused by spammers and scammers.
  • Potential to get abused by farmers.
  • The additional space and processing needs of a mail server will incur additional costs for ArenaNet.
