ArenaNet talk:Guild Wars 2 suggestions/Customizable armor appearance

It would be cool for the developers to get into more detail with armor creation, and provide more freedom for characters to create their own style. To eliminate a cartoonish (aka WoW) sense of style, the developers could make armor templates and then allow players to alter the color and the material composition of every section of armor (collar, midline, sleeve, etc). You'll probably have to research a seamstress thouch (which could be fun). An armor template would be like a buttoned shirt, an ordinary breastplate. That sort of thing. To even go further, you can add accessories, like the spikes on the warriors primeval, a dagger at the waist or leg, pendants and bracers etc. (Terra Xin 10:46, 17 June 2008 (UTC))

I would absolutely LOVE to see this idea implemented, and if "elite" armor is also available, you could craft at an "elite" crafter to get the elite version of what you want to craft + more options. And if you have to travel to certain normal/elite craftors to get certain armors/accessories/etc in other towns and explorable areas, perhaps you could "buy the recipie" of a certain armor/accessory/etc from them, store the "recipie" in a recipie book, where you would have it available for all crafters, this way keeping us from being limited in our armor crafting. --Elven Chaos 17:37, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Nice for personalising, thats for sure. Question is what the toll would be on system requirements. For instance a breastplate with 5 sections with 4 options each already means 625 possible armors. Alternatively you could program the parts as individual 'armors', which makes for 20 armors to be programmed, but also means 5x as many 'armors' worn on each character, which really adds up with hundreds of people in an outpost.

it shouldn't cause much toll on system if you keep this feature in an explorable private instance, much like the Isle of the Nameless in Temple of Balthazar.

I would LOVE it if the RUNES and INSIGNIAS you put on your armor have the options to be VISIBLE on your armor. Just a little extra work from our dev team but we would praise you eternally for it -- this idea easily extends to the concept of this discussion page (customizeability). Why, you could have your own customizeable runes/insignias which could be visible on your armor and used for no other reason than aesthetics (you could even customize the look of the existing *functional* armor mods... imagine a Survivor insig with a skull and crossbones on it or something). And that is just one of the customize-ability options. Jarrkha 18:45, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Yes I'm aware that I can't spell at all. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:Will Greyhawk (talk).

I cleaned the article up for you a bit, good suggestion. I'm not sure on how to correct the page name though, so perhaps someone will come by and do it. --Elven Chaos Elven's Talk Page 22:14, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

I like it. although you should add more description to it. --Yozuk 05:42, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Awesome idea. It's cool AND balanced. It's also make you more attached to your armor, which is a good thing. Just Awesome. One last time...Awesome :) 77.125.107.237 10:22, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

I'll see what I can do about more description. I spend a lot of time thinking about this stuff, but when I try to write it down it flies out of my head.--Will Greyhawk 17:10, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Hope this edit helps a little bit, still kinda new to this. And if anyone can tell me how to post links so I can show screenshots it'd be greatly appreciated.--Will Greyhawk 17:21, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Screenshots can be shown if you first upload them (as a usewr image), and then link normally to them. /eg Image:User Will Greyhawk SS1.jpg) Backsword 17:46, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

I like this idea as it would improve your own unique look and not have a lot of others who might look like you. --PCGamer07 11:49, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Deletion?

Why is this a canidate for deletion? Yes, independent pieces are confirmed but this is suggesting letting players choose/set varients for seperate armor pieces, like how high the select boots go up your leg and ect. --Elven Chaos Elven's Talk Page 21:57, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Yeah that's great but I don't see why the article needs to be deleted when articles about a space marine profession or vampire races are allowed to stay in. Please elaborate on what they mean by armor variants, is that going to be like Deldrimor armor or something? Because to be frank, I wasn't impressed by the concept of the Deldrimor INCOMPLETE armor. If it isn't please let me know. Hell if it does work better then what I suggested, go ahead and delete the article. As long as you consider some of the more ridiculous suggestions as well.--Will Greyhawk 15:01, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

I don't see your reason for deletion as being justifiable. Sorry. Guess we'll see what the devs think when they see it. -Painted Bird

I think this is how you should get "Elite" armor.

You know how there's a suit of Platemail and then there's Elite Platemail? Instead of making someone craft a whole new suit of armor from scratch, they should use a system like this. Once they've crafted a suit of max Platemail, they can go to an armor Customizer NPC and choose to upgrade each component to an elite appearance for a fee. There could be multiple arts for the same armor set, but you couldn't change one basic armor piece into another elite piece (Charr Hide only turns into an elite Charr Hide art, not magically into Elite Platemail).

In other words, I can only make a suit of max armor into an elite suit of the same type. But there could be several different elite art forms to choose from. Here's an example:

  • Basic "Charr Hide" can be upgraded to:
    • "Vicous Charr Hide" that has teeth on it (kinda like the existing art)
    • "Ferocious Charr Hide" that has metallic blades on it or something like that.
    • "Chieftain's Charr Hide" that has ornamental and shiny plates and stuff and looks all high-society. Charristocrats, anyone? :-)
  • Basic "Wyvern Armor" can be upgraded to:
    • "Dragon Armor" which has the existing elite appearance.
    • "Ancient Wurm Armor" which looks more like the remnants of a Dracolich/Bone Dragon (think of wearing Rotscale as a suit)
    • "Crystal Dragon Armor" which uses crystalline accents like the areas in Glint's lair and are all sparkly and pretty and stuff.

Anyway. You could craft and upgrade the armor at the same NPC or have a separate Customizer from the crafter. Either way works. You could upgrade each armor set piece by piece using any combination of the elite armor arts. The NPC could either charge you just a straight fee of x.....y..z gold or could use the Crafting Material + Gold system. Whatever they (the devs) want to do. Before upgrading each piece, you would be prompted with a preview window (very similar to the dye preview window) so you could see what it would look like before you upgrade it (since there will be no refunds, although I think you should be able to change the piece back or to a different elite art just by paying the gold again if you change your mind...)

Anyway. I think this system would be much better for upgrading max armor to prestige armor art than just making people throw out their old suit and craft a new one from scratch.

There could also be armor Customizers who are like the FoW guy who can upgrade your armor to a set of core elite art. For instance:

  • Any suit of Max Charr Hide can be customized by the FoW guy to:
    • Obsidian Charr Hide
  • Any suit of Max Platemail can be customized by the FoW guy to:
    • Obsidian Platemail

Doing it that way would require a TON of armor art for the Obsidian guy though. So it might be easier to just have certain areas only craft a new suit of the prestige armor set (like the current system). That or make them able to convert any suit of existing armor into the Obsidian suit. (It wouldn't matter what you were wearing, as long as it was max, it would turn into Obsidian armor). Anyway. Whatever. Painted Bird 17:38, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

The customize armor could also be designed as a gold sink; example: default style 1k, customized style 5k for this to work the customize option would need to be advanced enough to be worth it. Blood Brother Zell 19:47, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
