The argument over what to do with Survivor and LDoA is one I used to participate in. I'm bringing up the topic here because it seems nobody else has yet. Part of the issue comes with Survivor not being introduced until the release of Factions. This resulted in a number of characters having progressed through much of the game, but never having a shot at this title. The goal then is to come up with a reasonable way to change Survivor to make it accessible to characters created before Factions. I go further to suggest that Survivor not be the kind of title where one failure will stop any further progress on the title. One thing is for sure to me though: if you are going to change Survivor in any way to make it accessible to repeat-timers or older characters, you must do something to LDoA to keep the two exclusive.

Legendary Defender of Ascalon[edit]

LDoA itself is, to me, an awful title. Why would you call someone a "Defender" for surrendering themselves to their sworn enemy over and over?

But aside from that, its original intention was, I believe, to be sort of a surprise or gift for those who did manage to find a crafty way to get to level 20 in pre-Searing. That's fine enough to me. However, if it was intended to be a gift for certain pre-Searing players, why allow them to take it into post-Searing?

The suggestion:

  • Remove LDoA from all characters.
  • When a character leaves pre-Searing, they lose their LDoA title and all progression in it.

The first line is not as extreme as it may sound at first. When all characters lose their LDoA title, all post-Searing characters will be unable to obtain LDoA ever again. Pre-Searing characters, however, will regain their progression in the track when they go back to their characters, or just be given the title if they are already level 20. Pre-Searing is unharmed, but post-Searing is cleansed of any LDoA-havers. The second line prevents LDoA from migrating to post-Searing anymore.

This is all to pave the way for the Survivor adjustment.

Survivor[edit]

After getting LDoA out of the way, the change to Survivor is very simple.

  • Upon death, progression in the Survivor title track stops (no different from how it currently works).
  • If you do not have Legendary Survivor, you may speak to a new NPC to have the Survivor track cleared from your character and your "base death count" reset.

Your "base death count" will be the number of deaths you will have to maintain in order to progress in the Survivor title track. Characters with a BDC of 0 will have never reset this number. A character with 25 deaths could get their BDC reset to become 25 deaths. If they then have a 26th death, Survivor progression would stop. This would not reset /deaths to 0 every time it would be used. In fact, in addition to showing your true deaths, /deaths could then tell you your current BDC.

With that, a character that has achieved anything short of Legendary Survivor can go to an NPC and reset their progression of this title. This slightly changes the title to being "accumulate 1,337,500 experience between deaths" rather than "accumulate 1,337,500 experience without dying".
