This project is under discussion...

What is this project?[edit]

Having updated the inscriptions page, I decided to look at the rest of the enhancements section, but I've stumbled across some problems with the current structure that I think need fixing before the pages are updated. I have tried to explain my reasoning below ... any feedback would be very welcome.

Existing structure[edit]

Category structure[edit]

This shows the current structure of all the categories relating to enhancements I could find.

Questions[edit]

Questions arising from the organisation of pages and categories as it stands.

  • Should inherent mods count as an enhancement? (or be listed under enhancements?)
  • Is "inherent mod" even the right terminology? The inherent mods on armour are addressed under "Armor bonus" at the moment with no mention of inherent, but if you look at the Basic armor page, it categorises the mods as "type - inherent". The inherent mods on weapons aren't addressed at all so far as I can tell ... Weapon bonus just redirects to List of weapon upgrades and has no mention of inherent mods.
  • Is "upgrade component" the right terminology for any enhancement you apply to a weapon, focus item, shield or armour? The nightfall manual lists runes and upgrade components separately, and from the description under upgrade component it's clear that this only applies to the prefix and suffix pieces of a weapon, focus item or shield. However, in the wiki, we treat inscriptions, insignia and runes as upgrade components too.
  • Is it correct to divide upgrade components (and by this I mean prefix and suffix pieces of weapons, focus items and shields) into "prefix" and "suffix", if these categories are used elsewhere to describe different enhancements. For example, the "prefix" on armour is the insignia and the "suffix" on armour is the rune.

Proposal for new structure[edit]

It seems to me that currently the terminology and structure of the enhancements section is a little confused. I propose the following to clean it up.

Category structure[edit]

  • Items
    • Enhancements
      • Equippable item enhancements
        • Inscriptions
        • Insignia
        • Runes
        • Upgrade components
      • Consumable enhancements
        • Foods
        • Scrolls

Food and Scrolls would of-course continue to be in the Category:Consumable items as well as being added to the new Consumable enhancements category.

Page structure[edit]

Enhancements will be divided into equippable item enhancements and consumable enhancements (much as it is now divided into upgrade components and temporary enhancements).

  • Enhancement
    • Equippable item enhancement
    • Consumable enhancement

The consumable enhancements can follow the same structure as they do now.

  • Consumable enhancement
    • Food
    • Scroll

The equippable item enhancements, however, might be best organised on the Equippable item enhancement page into "prefix" "modifier" and "suffix" as follows.

Equippable Item Prefix Modifier Suffix
Martial weapon
Any martial weapon1 Upgrade component (prefix) Inherent mod Inscription Upgrade component (suffix)
Spellcasting weapon
Staff Upgrade component (prefix) Inherent mod Inscription Upgrade component (suffix)
Wand N/A Inherent mod Inscription Upgrade component (suffix)
Offhand
Focus item N/A Inherent mod Inscription Upgrade component (suffix)
Shield N/A Inherent mod Inscription Upgrade component (suffix)
Armour
Any armour piece2 Insignia Inherent mod Rune
1Could be listed in the table as "Melee weapon" and "Ranged weapon" ... or even each individual weapon.
2Could be listed in the table as each individual armour piece (headpiece, body, boots etc)

Even if the equippable item enhancement page isn't organised with that table, the pages should be organised as follows:

  • Equippable item enhancement
    • Inherent modifier
    • Inscription
    • Insignia
    • Rune
    • Upgrade component (prefix)
    • Upgrade component (suffix)

It probably also wouldn't hurt to create these last few pages in order to explain the terminology, and link back to from articles where they're already in use (in particular the term "equippable item" which gets used so much!

  • Equippable item
  • Prefix
  • Modifier
  • Suffix
