Kukull Phanto Pyped

The first to adopt the title was Kukull Phanto Pyped who is now in post-searing Ascalon with her faithful pet Mace Macka a Melandru's Stalker. Unlike the Baron, she left without much to say. She did bid her imp nicknamed "Gimpy" a fond farewell on YouTube. She named him that because he tended to wheeze a lot.

Baron Velspa

User Wendy Black Baron DoA.jpg

Baron Velspa is the second character to take this title. Just after 7PM EST, Baron Velspa approached Lieutenant Langmar and said the following;

Lieutenant Langmar...
Over past two months you have sent me out on some questionable errands.
I have died 608 times, worked 189 hours and 45 minutes for the good people of Ascalon.
I have rescued the drunken Duke Gaban from the catacombs,
defeated an army of the undead, and escorted farmer Hamnet back home countless times...
Today, I am about to turn in my final errand and I just wanted you to know,
I am not going off to the Ascalon Academy. I am staying right here in Ascalon.
I am not joining the military forces and following that love sick Prince into battle.
Instead I plan to hang out here, tell long boring stories and party.
Thank you, wasn't there suppose to be a large check?

Some of the good people in Ascalon assure the Baron that his check is in the mail.

Azurial Mentalice

When Azurial Mentalice took the title she ran off screaming about the voices in her head telling her to Spend Attribute points. After she cooled down, she returned to talk with Sir Tydus about joining the Ascalon Academy. He told her she wouldn't be accepted because she is mentally unbalanced. She continued to plead with him, wanting to join the academy. "Some day I will join the Academy and everything will be different after that... I just know it.", said Mentalice. One day she got past Sir Tydus on the pretense of carrying someones belongings to them in the Academy. Once inside she proved herself in combat to the Prince and Sir Tydus had no choice but to back down.

Shade of Velspa

This is the post version of Baron Velspa, I ran him through just under 100 hours and shot him into post. He is listed under defenders as my fourth DoA since this a new character based on what happened to Baron Velspa after his fate in the searing. This one got a lot of assistance from a guild member (Kirigami) and was developed mostly doing Charr runs up to level 10.

My Method

So you want to go for the title "Defender of Ascalon"? The real key is patience. I never followed any walkthroughs. I decided to tell you how I have done it 4 times and what I have learned. First there is no "quick method", you will spend well over 100 hours of game time on this character in presearing Ascalon. The best you can hope for is for some tank to power level you to 10 through Charr runs, but that won't shave much time off.

After you create your hero, go straight to the mesmer Lady Althea as a temporary second profession -even if you plan to be a mesmer- don't do the bull quest, just get the skills. If you have bonus abillity type /bonus to get the imp summon stone. Then head off to Fort Ranik by road. Kill everything along the way or just let the imp do it for you. Once you get to Master Ranger Nente dump the mesmer skills and choose ranger (unless you are a ranger). Get the pet either the stalker or a wolf will work fine. At this point you should be either a Ranger with Mesmer skills in training or some other profession with Ranger skills in training. Also you should have a pet and maybe the imp. Kill everything in the forest on the way to Fort Ranik.

Now if you are not level 5, by the time you reach the fort, you should go back to the forest and kill more critters. At this point run or teleport back to the abbey and clean the catacombs a few times. Bored yet? Then jump out of the catacombs at The Barradin Estate and run around his place killing bandits on the far west to grawl in the valley to the east. Most creatures in these areas are levels 1 to 3. They are completely useless once you get to level 8. Below is a chart explaining how many you need to kill on solo hunting.

Creatures at
Your Level Level 3 Level 2 Level 1
5 69 Kills 138 Kills 184 Kills
6 157 Kills 209 Kills 313 Kills
7 234 Kills 350 Kills -
8 388 Kills - -

This is why I suggest, you finish the quests at level 7 to get to level 8 and select your second profession. Others may wish to save it for level 16. Now you need to get a tank at level 8 to assist you at making multiple runs on the charr bosses across the wall.

The bosses are all level 10. Blaze Bloodbane is a Monk, Ghast Ashpyre is a Mesmer, Jaw Smokeskin is an Elementalist, and Red Eye the Unholy is a Necromancer. All these bosses are worth double XP. Your high level tank won't earn any experience and you should see over 1000 XP gained from each run on these 4 bosses alone. At level 8, if you are sharing XP with your tank then you will earn 540 XP per run on just the 4 bosses. All other charr are level 8 giving you 100 at the same level.

The Baron took a level 8 up to level 10 in about in less than 8 runs on these bosses. If you see Baron Velspa online he will run level 8 or 9 up to level 10 for no fee, since he is always looking for charr kits and stuff. The Baron is also a firm believer in Karma.

So you are level 10 in less than 24 hours of game time. You have a long road ahead of you in the Vanguard Quests you get from Lieutenant Langmar. Milk these quests for all the XP you can get. Take the quest but don't complete it until the next one becomes available. The quest will add higher level minions to fight and each one gives you XP. There are 9 quests that cycle daily.

After you reach level 14 the minions on the VQ will raise up to level 11. When you reach level 17 the minions raise one last time to level 15. This makes level 16 a very slow level, since you can't even get XP from the charr or the charr bosses. You could spend 10 or 11 days at level 16, if you have no other way to gain XP.

Utini Wupwup is a good one to get dyes and XP. There are about 25 minions spawned each time you enter the zone. So at level 10 these level 8 minions are worth 64 XP each and you only need to redo the quest 4 to 5 times (100 kills) to reach level 11. However by level 13 these minion are only worth 16 XP and it may be best just to complete the VQ and move on. Otherwise you need just over 500 kills, with an average of 20 minions that calls for repeating it 25 times. Milking the daily VQ could be a quick method for some to get the title within 2 weeks time.

Repeating the VQ
Your Level Minions XP Runs
10 100 Kills 6400 5
11 146 Kills 7008 8
12 238 Kills 7616 12
13 513 Kills 8208 26
14 184 Kills 8832 9
15 294 Kills 9408 15
16 625 Kills 10000 32
17 166 Kills 10624 9
18 234 Kills 11232 12
19 369 Kills 11808 19

The XP values above plus the 1000 XP recieved for the quest will get your character to the next level. Once you do reach level 20, you will lose your imp, and be awarded the title Defender of Ascalon.
