Thanks

Just putting categories to uncategorized templates. ♥ Ariyen ♀ 20:38, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Please be careful, you really blew up the user box template category. Using noinclude is an important part of categories.--Ceru talk contribs 21:10, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
just noticed. Would it be sensible to add noinclude to all categories in template boxes? o.O if so, I can go back and fix others in other areas. ♥ Ariyen ♀ 21:14, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
It's only really needed when you're actually placing a template in a category. It keeps the category placement from populating to all pages who reference it. You almost gave me a heart attack with Template:User infobox userbox The category went from <300 to >800.--Ceru talk contribs 21:20, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
Okay. Thanks. :-) ♥ Ariyen ♀ 21:23, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Nowiki or Pre

Okay what's the difference between Pre and nowiki? You leave Pre on some of those boxes, and yet put nowiki on others. I'm just wondering why? If not any difference, I don't see the reason in changing those. If there is a difference, there's many more boxes that need to be changed from pre to nowiki vice versa. -- User Ariyen sig icon.gifriyen 01:42, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

The difference is that pre causes the box to show. Nowiki can cause the box to show, but only if done at the beginning of the line and including a space before the tag; otherwise, nowiki simply causes any wiki code to not be processed. Pre is the preferred tag, so far. This is because userbox calls are short and the box draws attention to users with little/no experience who want to use it; however, Noctarch seems to view this usage as being not aesthetically pleasing and seems to, somehow, find its usage on userboxes he created to be personally insulting. Because it serves the same purpose while appeasing him, nowiki with no preceeding pace is used on the userboxes created by him. By the end of this next run-through, all tags, except those mentioned, should be pre.
Also, PAGENAME is used in the noinclude. By placing it there, the category of users who use the box will be sorted by the user's name. The other option is that all those pages would show up sorted under U for "User:".--Ceru talk contribs 02:29, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
So pre in the userboxes, by others but him. I already know about the noinclude tag, Pling sent me a link on that. was pretty interesting. Thanks, still learning. -- User Ariyen sig icon.gifriyen 02:43, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

[1] il faut? — Seru User Seru Sig2.png Talk 18:05, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

I changed the code for readability and renamed "Description" to "Usage" because that describes the section better. It's part of my attempt to create a standard format for userboxes in the template category. --Ceru talk contribs 18:24, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
First good job at understanding my french =] and I get that, but still seems like you don't need to change the code already put in. — Seru User Seru Sig2.png Talk 21:58, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
No, I didn't need to; however, it made the code more readable for people not as familiar with the userbox template as you or I and didn't actually change anything in the display. If you look at any of the other userboxes, they are all in that format. As I said, I'm trying to come up with a standard for the template. So far, it starts with the userbox at the top, with each variable explicitly defined, a usage section that includes the code for users to use the box within pre tags (barring the ones by Noctarch), a definition of variables, if there are multiple variables in action, examples of usage and what the resulting userbox is. It's still evolving but that corner of the template categories is starting to look more organized and user-friendly. If you have any suggestions or changes in mind, let me know. So far I've been the main voice for this because no one else, besides occasionally Ariyen or C4K3, has been that interested. --Ceru talk contribs 06:02, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
hmm, what about a template userbox policy, containing what you're doing for future references, by others who want to create them? Just a though.... -- User Ariyen sig icon.gifriyen 06:59, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
I like the thought but I don't see it working in practice. It's easier to have a few people fixing things and getting them up to standard than it is to get a large group of people to agree to set policy regarding format for something so few really care about. You'll notice that the Policy Hammer is used somewhat sparingly. Also, it makes it easier for someone to create a box and add it to the template if there's nothing official that defines what can and cannot be said, which template is to be used, that a page will be deleted if it says "Description" instead of "Usage", etc. The closest I'd get is a standard that makes sense and makes it easy to learn from examples and to update pages that don't meet the standard to meet it. --Ceru talk contribs 08:15, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

UserTime Userbox

Your right, the spacing is affected by that last period in "which is not active.". I decided to leave it off to try to keep the box the same size throughout the year, and keep it the standard userbox size. I also made the box when I was first experimenting with variables. ;) -- Cat Slayer Calli User Cat Slayer Calli signature.png 01:57, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

I ended up learning a lot about how variables work in wikicode from this box. I create pages for the ones that end up as projects to me; the ones that take effort to figure out how they work and how to make them do what I want. I learned a lot from your code, including how to laugh at the little things that thorw things off. I remember having to test and retest a bunch of times only to discover that it wouldn't always line up. I couldn't figure out why until I noticed that period. When I realized what it was, I had to laugh. --Ceru talk contribs 02:51, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
Ya, spacing always seems to get me, especially in web-pages (FireFox vs IE). You wouldn't think a period would set everything off by a line... I also like variables, if you couldn't tell. Learned the concept in Windows batch files, and just love to over-complicate things with them. :-) -- Cat Slayer Calli User Cat Slayer Calli signature.png 03:13, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

Userboxes

Found some for you. Linking them so you can categorize them and fix them to the appropriate areas. Too tired to do this, myself. Just got teething baby to sleep. Template:User_favourite_character Template:User_Prussia Template:User_specialevents Template:User_something_off Template:User_borrowed_from_Seru Template:User_Ru A long one and I speak of the name in title of template. Another long one and this is the third and fourth. Here's more Template:User_Paragon_Dance Template:User_North_America Template:User_Comic_Fan (He does have some cool comics} Template:User_Colour_wheel (is that beetle drinking to show that? haha. j/k) Template:User_Charr_fan Template:User_Campaign_Prophecies Template:User_Campaign_Nightfall Template:User_Campaign_Factions Template:User_Campaign_Eye_of_the_North Template:User_Campaign_EotN Template:User_BMG_Fan2 Template:User_BMG_Fan Template:User_"I_am_Balth!" Template:UserLotus/Personal_Userbox (Couldn't quite figure that out) Template:NoNerfPara Template:User_txt. nite. sorry! -- User Ariyen sig icon.gifriyen 08:49, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

got more... Mastery Of the North Canthan Cartographer. -- User Ariyen sig icon.gifriyen 18:52, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
Okay, went through the lot. I didn't do anything with Template:User_favourite_character because it appears to be one particular user's favorite character. I think it may be eligible to be moved to that user's user space. I also didn't touch Template:UserLotus/Personal_Userbox as it appears to not be a userbox but that person's take on the user infobox. --Ceru talk contribs 04:50, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Last warning

moved to User talk:Noctarch

Hi

I tagged all your newly created userbox templates for speedy delete G4 because we don't need two copies of the same template and Noctarch has shown no sign of wanting his deleted. --User Ezekial Riddle silverbluesig.pngRIDDLE 03:19, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

As he seems to not want his to be touched by anyone else, I was going to remove the from the category so no one but he will be tempted to change them. --Ceru talk contribs 03:21, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

As is your inflexibility and unwillingness to open a dialogue. What's your point? --Ceru talk contribs 03:25, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
Everyone stop fighting and listen to my song!!! User Felix Omni Signature.pngelix Omni 03:29, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Does this actually matter?

This. Why can't it be left without the spaces? Titani Uth Ertan 05:13, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Does it really matter? No, it just makes it easier to read. It is the same reason that I rewrite the boxes written as one line of code with no variables as multi-line sections of code with the variables explicitly stated. --Ceru talk contribs 06:33, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
I see. I hardly feel that spaces before and after the equal sign are necessary, but k. Titani Uth Ertan 10:40, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

O hai

When making your character pages, do you think you could put a space in your edit summary? Thanks. --User Ezekial Riddle silverbluesig.pngRIDDLE 04:34, 27 November 2009 (UTC)

I didn't know it made a difference. I'll try to remember to do so. --Ceru talk contribs 04:39, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
