ArenaNet talk:Guild Wars 2 suggestions/Dual Wield

It would be incredibly imbalanced. Either dual-wielded weapons will deal far more damage than two-handed weapons, or single one-handed weapons with a shield/focus item would deal far less damage. The only way to balance it is greatly reduce the difference between single and dual-wielded weapons, which completely destroys the idea. --Sir Bertrand 19:34, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

LOL assassin's in OGW have dual wield :P and it isn't imbalanced.93.86.82.15 10:12, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

It isn't unbalanced, and of course dual wielding will do more damage then 1-h and a shield/focus. That is because the off hand will give different bonuses which balance it out. However 2-h should do the same damage and 2 1-h weapons. Making this completely balanced.--Catforsale344 17:52, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
It wouldnt 'imbalance' anything.. for example, you use dual swords.. yeh more dmg and most likely atack faster, but say if you took a sword with a shield you get extra armour by wielding the shield and most likely spells that make your block rate higher which you can only get while using a shield. The 2 handed weapons most likely will have a high damage rating making them just as powerfull as dual weapons. but so far nothing has been anounced so there prob is a chance that there wont even be dual weapons. I thought of this idea too, but I think that only a warrior-like profession should be able to use this feature; for, say, if you were to use a Mo/W, the monk wouldn't be able to dual wield. az :D 15:33, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

There are other ways to balance dual-wield beside armor penalty (i.e. not equipping a shield) like any combination of the following:
  • Make it a passive skill you must equip on your skillbar like Charm Animal. (Maybe even 2 skill slots?)
  • Require near max skill point investment for two or more attributes.
  • High character level requirement.
  • Increase the armor rating of shields.
  • Make dual wielders suffer more damage against ranged weapons/magic attacks.
  • Make defensive/block skills require an equipped shield. (might be overcome with weapon-swapping)
Dual wielding martial weapons seems popular, but what's wrong with dual wielding magical weapons? I'm not sure how that would work out though or even if that could make sense. More damage or faster cast rate but have less energy? Need to think more on this one.

I have a proposal for you. How about we Have it some thing like An attribute for duel wielding and have a % chance to double strike rather then have it double strike ever time. Like lets say you have 12 in double strike and 12 in axe mastery. You would gain a bonus 1% bonus from your axe mastery and another 1% from you double strike for each point you invest into your attributes. But at the same time you would have to have the weapons you have equipped have a required amount of points invested in to each attribute to do there max damage. Also the of hand weapon would do less damage. I also think it should attack like this you attack with your main weapon first then the next attack you attack with your of hand weapon taking the of hand penalty with that weapon every time it strike. You would still have the chance to double strike with them. in this case it would be a 24% chance. Ultimately though you should not be able to dual wield all weapon. Mainly ranged weapons and 2 handed weapons. This rule should not apply to daggers. daggers should count as a 2 handed weapon like they are now.--Yozuk 01:01, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

I don't get the dilemna, they already did this with the assassins. They dual wield weapons and have double strikes, it's just like they have 2 identical daggers instead of two different weapons in their hands. Also you shouldn't attack faster while dual-wielding, just have a chance of double striking (could be dependant on level), and dual-wielding a weapon other than daggers should have some negative effect like lower damage or slightly decreased attack speed. 70.67.3.23 05:29, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Thats what I was saying. you should read the other comments before responding.--Yozuk 20:29, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

The only reason I would want this is to add a realistic feel of reality. This has been discussed in other threads in relation to rangers and their endless quivers. It makes sense to have some sort of passive,non-attribute affected, non-customizable weapon for a ranger. Firing a bow at point blank range is a little asinine. I know it's just a game but can we try to imply some sort of battle mechanics? Some would say this as being unfair to other professions but if said weapon is passive and unalterable than how can it imply any kind of advantage over say, a warrior or assassin?--dagovirtuoso 14:09, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

For the record assassin's don't really dual wield since they are both the same weapon making it more like a 2 handed weapon like scythes and hammers.--207.172.193.204 21:59, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

To balance dual wielding they could do that one weapon do 90% of their base damage and the one that is in the offhand option do a 85%. The percentages are only an example, players with 2 weapons will do more damage than anyone with only one but not so much at cost of losing shield protection or focus energy. In the other hand, I think that assassins should have only one dagger as standard option and one attribute (for example dagger mastery if they maintain it) can give a % of double striking (if only one dagger is equipped) or, if you wield 2 daggers, reduce the dual wielding % penalization.--Geoden 12:35, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Doing it like WoW

where warriors in PvP are better with 2h weapons, not dual wield, would be good. Napalm Flame 14:01, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Another game that has Dual Wielding weapons is Last Chaos, but when you get the weapons its actually one item, the attack power and rate is a lot higher, but the shields in that game also have a significant defense unlike GW1. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:75.55.223.118 (talk).

+26 AL isn't significant defense? User Raine R.gif Raine - talk 10:40, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Shield Attack ideas

i think it would be brilliant if you could equip 2 shields, then use attack skills with those. Mild, with more of a defensive aspect of course, but it would make for an interesting gameplay style.--72.189.85.14 03:22, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Also, if you were able to dual weild, using an "axe with a sword" for example could be extremely interesting. Or a "Spear with a Sword" could use the spear for close range thrusts.--72.189.85.14 03:26, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
