Q3 maps[edit]

I had forgotten how fun it is to create quake3 maps. The last one i made is ~10 years old, and i must admit that it was a pain in the rurik to remember how to set everything up in order to start editing. But this time i got GMax and its tempest plugin, that means no more Q3 Rad brushes-made models. Yseron - 90.48.0.249 07:45, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Going from 3ds R4 for DOS (and its anti piracy vertices explosions every random number of scene saves) to gmax was not easy, but after 2 hours i am again almost able to do what i have in mind...

when i will add the lightmaps, it should be ok. I'm back on doing maps. (Note for self: resist to the temptation of riping the ancestral land map and make a q3 one out of it).

I made a new version that is more action focused and has become our studio's map. I have begun to search for web sites where to upload it. Yseron - 86.64.70.44 12:46, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

Map design, look and feel[edit]

After testing what kind of look and feel we can get with extensive use of MD3s, i think i will be the first to get a doom3 kind of map for Quake3, but without killing the frame rate. The texture have been taken from doom3 screenshots and squared-back using a Gimp's perspective plugin. Dont look for these assets in doom3, i made them.

Gentlemen, start your engines[edit]

The only thing i recall about this arcade stand is that it was so noisy that you couldnt hear yourself playing another game. You would ask the manager if he could setup the thing to be a little less noisy and he would answer that "sorry, new games have to attract people attention". Those where the days when you could ask the guy that pick up the money in the machines to give you a few free credits while the manager was watching away... Gentlemen, start free credits ! Pyramids mysteries solved[edit]

So simple... ( hints at the end ) It's almost a shame.

That and the new low cost space travels plus the international moon missions for patchs of precious minerals and ice, what a century guys... One sure thing, i found the perfect place where to store my goodies: imagine your gold ingots teasing the potential thiefs on the surface of the moon: "BFGI (big fooking gold ingot): come and get me if you can :)". Moding, or how to extend a game's life[edit]

Moding have always been a sure way to extend a game's life. Obviously enough, gw and gw2, by nature, are not suitable for "real" player made modifications. But let's get to the point, here is my personal version of the quake3 shotgun.

Of internet, forums and teenagers[edit]

I have been on planet quake to submit some pictures and, not suprisingly, the guys that appear to be in charge there seem to come check what have been submitted once a year. I have been on quite a number of forums over the past 15 years and i have come with some obervations regarding their nature, and the nature of people who admin them. First you have to know that a new user is by default an enemy, even on forums who aim at forming a large comunity. So how is that ? How is it possible ? It can stay a mystery until you one day decide to know who is behind those "whoru". The answer is predictable: a teenager with a short temper for everything that does not belong to its inner circle of friends, failing to realize that the adult world that is waiting for him recquire the opposite. Teenagers have a lot of problems to overcome in order to reach maturity, their lack of status and experience lead them to put a mark on every little bit of work they happen to make. In fact they are fond of copyrights, often not realizing that it is perceived as laughable by people who make a living out of their work. But the other interesting thing about teens is that exceptionnel capacity to proclaim their right to be different, and flame everything that does not fall into their standards while establishing a dressing code. Althought all this is painfull, it's a necessary step to evolve and reach maturity... Yseron - 86.209.70.129 13:22, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

One of those admins that wasnt born when i was playing my first console game have a strange way to manage one of the forums i have visited this week end, a public one powered by IGN. It work like this: he got a brother, every submission that dont come from his brother, him or his friends have a great chance to not be approved. So what i have been told is that my map wont be approved because i used a few doom 3 textures, because "you know, i's copyrighted, they are not for free" (wanting to gain some time using existing stuff could threaten world peace and bring the end of the world, to use id software game props in another id software game with no profit in sight... in a map...). So i must re-submit the map but with some textures of my own.

The only problem is: i can.

Althought i am a programmer and not an artist, it took me only 2 days. If he still refuse the map, he will be in the difficult obligation to explain why this time.

I did a bit of research with the keywords "planet quake adminstrators". The result here on wikipedia:

"History: Something Awful was created by Richard "Lowtax" Kyanka,[5] who remains in control of the site but is supported by other contributing writers and administrators. Kyanka started Something Awful several months before leaving his previous job, after using his "Cranky Steve" persona to write a comedic website update deriding the attitude and work performance of a fellow Planet Quake administrator".

I will avoid planet quake from now on. Yseron - 109.213.116.139 12:41, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

Map available[edit]

I win this match, but at a terrible price.

Tactic: host and make the map available myself and advertise it where it bypass administrators ego.
Response: cant prevent the map from being known, but can make a non suitable/finished/polished version available here
Counter attack: make the real version available to all here and there

QuakeWorld: The inevitable "whoru" step did not last longer than a few posts, with an agressive level brushing teletubies one, wich seem to indicate that the site is in majority frequented by mature people, or that teens produce less hormones than in the past. Incoming dervish update[edit]

I'm not sure of what to think of it.

However one part did catch my eye because i dont have a sufficient level of english to understand it the right way: "These restrictions exist because permanent avatars would simply be too strong. We realized that we needed to rework these skills so that it's viable to maintain them permanently.".

E-len Replay[edit]

Some time ago i talked about how i was happy to store replays for a video game with an average weight of 120K for 6 minutes of replay. I now did narrow this to 8Ko. It simply evolve around precision-error management and in-place data compressions. The idea comes from a colleague who begun to program when the famous veteran ( who was then 16 years-old ) built the first atari 1600 dev kit ( atari was not providing dev kits to developpers back then ). To make it short, use 16bits fixed point values to store deltas, keep track of the precision errors resulting from the current sampling, report the correction of the previous precision error onto the next sampling and so on. It completely eliminate the need to add sync frames or any other similar stupid thing. Concerning the in-place data compression that occurs simultaneously in a thread, compression ratio will depend on your personal definition of a data chunk. A six minutes replay = 8Ko with 4 replay tracks of vectors and 2 replay tracks of float. Yseron - 81.49.228.126 21:37, 5 May 2011 (UTC)
