ArenaNet talk:Guild Wars 2 suggestions/Guild Wars 2 Level Editor

Now don't get me wrong, I'd be glad if ANet let us do this. But there are a few considerations that make it somewhat less than likely: 1) The level-designer ANet uses is probably copyrighted, and they might not want to release it to the public for various legal reasons. 2) Even if we could design our own areas, we would never be able to use them unless ANet released the GW2 hosting programs to the public. Which would be very, very nice and helpful and kind of them... but financially and legally very dumb. The only way we could use them is if they accepted quality fan-made content, which is unlikely.

Now, if GW2 had an option to play offline, on your own, with no other players similar to how Hellgate and Diablo do, then this might be feasible. But it's still very unlikely. It's not like Star/Warcraft, Neverwinter Nights, or other games that release module-designers, because those games all have their multiplayer content controlled largely by players, not by a central server. With all that said, it'd be really cool if they would let us do that. It would be really, really cool if they released the server information and let anybody who had a proper serial key host their own GW server with their own variations of skills and everything, but again, that will never happen. --Jette 13:54, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Just condensed the article and fixed some syntax. I'm not a fan of Level Editors, but I won't look the other way if they decide to add it. I think it'll promote another type of audience to play this game.(Terra Xin 23:07, 7 July 2008 (UTC))
Don't make us SEND IT IN. Make it more like an LOL kinda thing or a practice area. For instance if you suck at dodging arrows you could create a map which has one enemy that shoots arrows at you and nothing else. If you suck at interrupting you can have one guy with multiple cast time attacks and try to interrupt him. If you are bored you could have 5 bosses fight you at once witha ton of other minions. Most importantly DO NOT HAVE THEM DROP ANYTHING. This kinda thing appeals to a lot of people, and if they are willing to put the time in, it's really worth it and fun.--The Gates Assassin 05:57, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
As I just noted, there's an additional problem: they probably can't just release their in-house tools for us to use, because it's a lot harder to ensure that the software will even be usable for anyone else. Firstly, you have less control over their computers, so it might not even run; secondly, there may be bugs/idiosyncrasies/usability problems that you can manage in your own development studio, but would result in a flood of technical support issues if you actually released it; finally, of course, there are legal reasons such as perhaps licensing of third-party technology that may cause the publisher to veto any attempt to release a level editor anyway. While this doesn't mean a publicly available level editor couldn't be made, it is a very significant undertaking, and considering the kind of return ArenaNet would get from it, I can't say I would expect them to go ahead with something like that. -- Sirius (talk) 05:25, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

My level editor discussion

I can't really remember what I said.. but if you don't like this idea because its copying you gotta remember A LOT of games do it and I mean A LOT and a lot of players enjoy it so don't be critical just coz u saw it in WoW. Oh yeah i also said you could click send after making a map and it would go in a player created content folder on a server. Then, just like spectating GvG, you could press y or whatev and have a list pop up with player created maps. When you double click it unpacks the file from the server and if someone is already there it'll just connect you to the district. I reckon allowing people to create password restricted districts would be a... reasonable idea. Although too many of these and it crashes GW. Oh! And this is probably a candidate for a mod for GW2 and not something that would come with it. I reckon ANet should really consider it coz it'd be its own advertising, easy enough to set up and a lot of people would buy it. Anyway, good idea, peace Spawnlegacy 08:00, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

removed Gate's Editor chunk, see Level Editor and its history[1](feel free to change history link to internal link, couldn't figure it out.) (untagged due to copyright issues) --Elven Chaos Elven's Talk Page 20:50, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
I really really like this idea and I think it would have been a great thing to have in GW2 being able to play with your character on custom made maps, however there must ofcourse be restrictions. They could add temporary items, temporary experience, temporary skills and temporary gold that only work while playing the map to pervent the players playing from using this as a way to cheat. If they would add an editor as powerful as the World Editor in Warcraft 3, It would be a genious way for anet if Anet to gain both a lager playerbase and more cash if were to autherize maps making them give ingame rewards like real gold and real items. They could easily sell autherized maps in mappacks that would work like a cheap expansion or they could add them as an extra bonus to their own expansions, unautherized maps could be run on players clients while autherized maps are runed on the Anet servers. I don't see any reason to see this as a bad thing other than that it would be hard and that it would take some time to do.--195.66.94.4 08:44, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
I don't see how a world editor would be realistic...do people in real life mold the planet with the click of a mouse?
Anyway, it will never happen, largely due to the fact that GW2 will be both online and (mostly) seamless. ~Shard User Shard Sig Icon.png 08:56, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
The Mists is Guild Wars most secret and mysterious place, it's the realm of the gods where all things are created. Many mortals believe that there only was one world created, that the gods are perfection. No one really knows the countless of tries it took for the gods to reach the perfection of the world that we experience today, all the outcasts, the worlds out of balance it took to create it. If mortal men only knew all the secrets that the mist holds all the failed creation they would be left in awe. One thing the gods never foresaw was the will and curiosity of man, when they granted access to the mists to a selected few who they deemed worthy they also opened the way, or the possibility if you may to obtain their most guarded secret. The knowledge of how to create worlds and access to all the forsaken worlds that never was to be.
There you go, a quick story to make the editor more "realistic" although I do agree that I don't think Anet are likely to release an editor however awesome it may be. It would just take too much effort and it may interfere with their selling plan to release expansions with new content as the only way to gain new content, releasing an editor would allow the players to renew it by themselves which is a potential threat to their selling plan. However if they were to do it as I suggested I still think it would be more of a gain than a loss. Although to make this work they would have to release a version for LAN play as custom maps must run on clients to not overload Anets servers and like I said it would be a lot of work but in the end I think it would be worth it.--195.66.94.4 12:33, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
