History

The Early Years and the Great Merger

The Guardians of the Light began as many distinct guilds which, through merging, became a very strong and active guild at the height of Guild Wars.

First among those was the Champions of the Light started by Tysac Vanguard and Celestial Sword. The guild established itself with the task: "To assist, educate, and guard those in need without asking anything in return". The guild grew gaining members such as Luthign Lake, Mendal Shephard, Baby Linh, Ironbow Irgarl, Brom Shatterstone, Tarvus Hammerhand, and Alarion Faerun. The Champions of the Light grew close to longtime friends in the Enlightened Guardians of Tyria through member Aya Starshine, the sister of EGoT Guild Leader, Taki Yazukasa Soe. After a time of working together closely, the two guilds decided upon a merger where the new guild name the Guardians of the Light was formed.

EGoT was, traditionally, a very selective guild and that tradition carried into the new, combined guild. Their numbers swelled and the Guardians grew, assimilating members of the RIP guild along the way. During this time, the size of the Guardians rose to over eighty members. However, the goals of the group had begun to divert from the tasks of "assisting, educating, and guarding". it was at this point that Tysac Vanguard chose to step down from his position as Guild Leader and hand the title to the captain of the PvE arm of the Guardians, Alarion Faerun.

The Reign of Alarion Faerun

Alarion Faerun began a restructuring of the guild leadership and membership soon after entering office. This restructuring cut membership in the guild to around 40 members. However, the number of people actively participating in events as well as the success rate of those events improved dramatically. This trend continued in both PvE and PvP action.

As the guild continued to improve, it attracted the attention of Binary Asylum, then guild leader of Turlington Strike Force. After a few weeks of combined activity and talks, TtSF merged into the Guardians with many of its members including Fyrilin Nighthawk, Bale Dullblade, The Quick One, and Aylee Lionheart.

The Oath and Code

At around the time of this merger, the Oath of the Guardians of the Light and the Code of the Guardians of the Light were refined. These are a set of statements that defined the specific roles the Guardians had found themselves falling into:

  • Champions of the Light - These people exemplify the original task of the the Guardians by dedicating themselves to helping those in need.
  • Sentinels of the Light - A group of highly dedicated individuals who are continuously on the lookout for scamming, bigotry, and other conduct violations.
  • Soldiers of the Light - A group of highly skilled and dedicated PvP competitors who fight for the glory of the Guardians alliance and were quite successful at claiming the Hall of Heroes on a regular occasion.

After the release of Guild Wars Factions, other guilds joined the Guardians Alliance, especially the Guardians of Ethereal Night, led by Artanis of Night and Lost Cape Guild. During this time, an effort was made to procure a large amount of Faction within the alliance. This was met with near-disastrous results as the membership was not as interested in gaining faction as the leadership had suspected.

The Guardians and the Soldiers

With this division came a split of the guild as the PvE and PvP arms of the Guardians of the Light split into two guilds: the Guardians of the Light, led by Alarion Faerun, Alexis Asis, Tarvus, and Fyrilin Nighthawk and the Soldiers of the Light, led by Tysac Vanguard, The Terminator, Binary Asylum, and Q Blade. The two guilds remained in alliance and communication with each other, but their goals were quite different.

After the split, both guilds grew greatly in membership satisfaction, participation, and numbers. The Soldiers maintained guild rankings below 300 (and often below 100) throughout their lifetime.[1]

The Reign of Kitten

After a time, real-world cares drew Alarion Faerun away from the guild for greater and greater time until he decided he could no longer responsibly hold the mantle of Guild Leader. After much deliberation among the Officers Council, he chose the officer Kitten to be the new Guild Leader. Kitten's reign was marked by contentment among the members though without the great membership growth of the previous two leaders. Activities continued and the guild held its previous glory.

The Fall

The time of Kitten's leadership ended when a division between the officers brought about a mass exodus within the guild. Many of the officers broke off and started CARE, a guild where they hoped to rebuild the original tenants of the Guardians way. Most of the regular members either joined them or splintered off to join other guilds or leave the game entirely leaving only a couple active members still in the guild. After this turmoil, leadership fell to Fyrilin Nighthawk to hold and, he hoped, rebuild the guild to its former glory.

The Hold and Reconstruction

Real-life kept Fyrilin from actively pursuing membership until he began to be contacted by former Guardians who wished to come back to the guild. Very little activity marked the year after The Fall as Fyrilin tried unsuccessfully to bring back old members and to recruit new ones.

Learning of the slow dissolution of CARE and the wish of many of its members to rejoin GoL, Fyrilin allowed all former Guardians of the Light members back into the guild and began to actively reach out to other former members who had not yet returned. Once he felt the guild was back on its feet, Fyrilin handed over leadership of the guild to Musha Shukou who had brought many of the members of CARE back to the guild.

Afterward

The Guardians of the Light continue to this day with active, friendly players who are still very willing to lend a hand and help those in need. [2]
